Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo Italian Champion

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO – BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO 1-3 (25-14, 20-25, 22-25, 20-25)

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 18, Birarelli 9, Portuondo Juantorena 15, Zygadlo 1, Vissotto Neves 13, Sala 10, Sokolov, Herpe, Bari (L), Gallosti. DNP Garcia Pires Ribeiro, Corsini. Coach. Stoytchev.

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Wijsmans 10, Henno (L), Parodi 16, Fortunato 2, Nuti, Nikolov 16, Grbic 5, Peda, Mastrangelo 10, Patriarca, Pieri. DNP Jeroncic, Marchisio. Coach. Giuliani.

The league title goes to Cuneo for the first time in history in front of 8426 fans, which generated a record 227.000 Euros takings at the Futurshow Station.

In the remake of the Italian Cup final, the club of Chairman Valter Lannuti took its revenge by winning a title it had been waiting for for years.

Both team felt the pressure but Trentino seemed to be one gear above. It dominated the first set with charisma and determination as Cuneo was overwhelmed by this raging start by the European Champions. Kaziyski is the main man in attack but it’s on the serve that Trento made the difference with 5 aces, while Cuneo had only one from Grbic to show for.

It’s precisely Grbic, Mvp of the semi-finals, that ignited the comeback. Cuneo responded to Trento’s every hit until it built a 21-16 lead that was never to be cut back by Trento.

Cuneo started the third where it had left off in the second. Wjsmans and Parodi scored big points to keep the opponents at a safe distance. Mastrangelo made its presence felt at the net leading his team to a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth set, Simone Parodi (MVP) took charge, pushing his team to its first ever league title as Nikolov scored the winning point. The court was soon invaded by the fans who celebrated their heroes.

Alberto Giuliani (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “This victory goes out to the people of Cuneo, they really deserve it for the support and passion they have shown all season. We did a good job of never relaxing and handling the difficulties”.

Vladimir Nikolov (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We got there in great shape, determined and confident. We managed to bounce back after a disappointing first set, determined to get this important result”.

Nikola Grbic (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “Our moment has come. The difference is that experienced players don’t let themselves be influenced by the way the game goes, they just wait for their moment to play. Trento made it really tough for us in the first set, especially on the serve. Then, we found our balance which led to this great victory”.

Radostin Stoytchev (Itas Diatec Trentino): “Cuneo played better than us tonight and fully deserved to win this league title. We started off brilliantly but then we lacked the composure. When we found ourselves trailing by a couple of points, we struggled to get back in it and became nervous. We looked too often for the individual play rather than a solution as a team. We should have been more patient but I can perfectly understand that we cannot always be at the top. We really wanted this title but this is the second consecutive year that we have to postpone the celebration. We’ll have another go at it next season with the awareness that we have to improve a lot in every fundamental in order to compete in every competition. V-Day has been a good experience for the team and the crowd. Even after this defeat, my opinion about this formula does not change as I believe it to be very exciting. The team that plays better wins, and today it was Cuneo”.

Emanuele Birarelli (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We tactically got it wrong. We got off to a strong start but then we faded, we failed to stay composed”.

Andrea Sala (Itas Diatec Trentino): “It was tight but they did a better job than us of maintaining their focus”.
