Final series between Sir Susa Scai Perugia and Cucine Lube Civitanova, which will award one of the two teams the 80th Scudetto in the Credem Banca SuperLega Championship.

Today’s focus shifts to the playoff history of the teams that finished the regular season in first place (like Sir Susa Scai Perugia) and those that reached the Scudetto Final after finishing the Regular Season in sixth place (Cucine Lube Civitanova).

Over the 44 editions (including the current one), the Regular Season winner has won the Scudetto on 18 occasions: the first was Kappa Torino, in 1984; the most recent is Itas Trentino, winners last season. Perugia has already succeeded once: in 2017/18, defeating Cucine Lube Civitanova in the final. On 14 occasions, however, the team that won the regular season, despite reaching the Scudetto final, failed to add their name to the list of honors. A situation that saw Perugia, despite themselves, dominate for three consecutive seasons (from 2018/19 to 2021/22, with the Covid-19 season in between, each time against Civitanova). In 2022/23, the Umbrians, despite finishing top of the table, failed to qualify for the final.

Specifically, these are the times the top-placed team in the RS league has won the Scudetto: Kappa Torino (1983/84), Panini Modena (1987/88), Il Messaggero Ravenna (1990/91), Maxicono Parma (1991/92, 1992/93), Las Daytona Modena (1996/97), Sisley Treviso (1993/94, 1998/99, 2002/03), Cucine Lube (2005/06, 2013/14, 2016/17), Itas Diatec Trentino (2007/08, 2010/11, 2012/13, 2014/15), Sir Safety Conad Perugia (2017/18), and Itas Trentino (2024/25).

This will be the second time a team that finished sixth at the end of the Regular Season will have the chance to compete in a Scudetto final: Lube’s sporting achievement follows that of Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza, which reached the final in 2007/08, losing in the final to Trento (but rebounding the following year by winning the Italian title). Cucine Lube Civitanova could therefore be the first team to win the Scudetto from sixth place at the end of the regular season.
