Roma earned its place in the A1 in two games over Crema. The long A2 season ended tonight in the PalaBertoni gym with Roma on top, just like it had been the case in January in Montecatini Terme in the Italian Cup. Giani’s team realised the league-cup double thanks to a tie-break win in Crema but the hosts had their chances of a decider right until the end.

In the first set, Roma got stuck at 18 while Baranowicz led his team to a 25-19 first set win. Zaytsev took charge at the beginning of a second set that Roma led from start to finish. The third set offered a thrilling end. Monti’s team missed a set point but Rosso and Cazzaniga made sure Crema was ahead again. The atmosphere was electric but this did not prevent the hosts from having a bad start to the fourth set. Monti tried a few substitutions, but in vain: it would all be down to the tie-break. The fifth set was tight until Poey made it 7-9. Two mistakes in attack from Crema handed the guests an 11-7 lead. Cazzaniga cut the deficit the 10-12, but Poey scored again. Another exchange Cazzaniga-Poey and it was 11-14. Two mistakes on the serve fixed the score at 13-15, sending Roma in the A1. The celebration could start with Giani lifted aloft by the supporters in triumph.

Andrea Giani (allenatore M.Roma Volley): “We proved we had character. We tried our best to score even when things were not going well, and this is what happened in the tie-break. I’ve said it before and I say it again, this team looks a lot like me in terms of character. It’s been a positive season, we have reached two targets. The good season was not made of a hundred victories and no defeats, but of many victories and few losses”.

Mattia Rosso (Samgas Crema): “I am smiling because it’s been a positive season anyway. I have to admit that I really hoped to bring them back to Roma for game 3, it would have been great. But they have players like the Cuban Poey, who can get the team out of tricky situations. We should have been more incisive and consistent on the serve to have a chance to win it”.
