League table

Itas Diatec Trentino 26, Lube Banca Marche Macerata 24, Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo 23, Casa Modena 21, M. Roma Volley 16, Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza 16, Sisley Belluno 16, Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia 14, Andreoli Latina 14, Marmi Lanza Verona 12, Copra Elior Piacenza 8, Fidia Padova 8, Energy Resources San Giustino 7, CMC Ravenna 5

M. Roma Volley – Copra Elior Piacenza

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 7 (4-3 Piacenza)

Dante Boninfante (M. Roma Volley): “I expect a very complicated game because Piacenza has yet to play at its best, for various reasons, they have not expressed all their potential. One must show respect to Piacenza because they have a lot of quality among the seven starters”.

Samuele Papi (Copra Elior Piacenza): “From now on we will have to play with more fighting spirit to get as many points as possible. We failed to reach our first target, the Italian Cup, but that doesn’t mean that we have to put our heads down. On the contrary, we have to fight even more. Roma is coming off a few wins but we’ll do our best to get the victory. Training is going well, with a good rhythm, but we still have to improve on certain aspects. Spirit is fine, the players are eager to bounce back”.

Marmi Lanza Verona – Casa Modena

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 14 (11-3 Modena)

Gabriele Cottarelli (GM Marmi Lanza Verona): “Verona-Modena should be a very interesting game both for the fans and the experts. Modena strengthened its squad compared to last season and they have bigger ambitions. As for Verona, besides winning the games against direct opponents, we have to try to get points against the stronger teams. On Monday, we’ll have a go at that”.

Daniele Bagnoli (coach Casa Modena): “It’s obvious that if we want to stay close to the top and have a chance to leapfrog Cuneo at the last game, we have to take maximum points against Verona and Vibo. It’s as obvious that it won’t be easy by any means. Verona is a dangerous team, they always play an intense and aggressive volleyball at home. Besides, they have Meoni, one of the best Italian setters. Serve could be key because if we could keep Meoni far from the net, our block-dig would be easier. We have what it takes to win in Verona, but we’ll need to play at our best”.

Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia – CMC Ravenna

PAST ENCOUNTERS: None

Gianlorenzo Blengini (coach Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “Ravenna has made some roster changes since the beginning of the season and the club is going through a good moment of form. They fight hard on court, they took three points against Piacenza and, although they did not take any points against Roma, they had an excellent performance and played face to face. Like all games, this is a difficult one we need to face with a good attitude and play to the maximum of our ability. We are working to do that”.

Antonio Babini (coach CMC Ravenna): “We are aware of the difficulty awaiting us in Vibo Valentia but we are eager to get something out of it. Hopefully, the loss against Roma despite a good game played will not have consequences on the team, although I have to say the players looked fine in training this week”.

Sisley Belluno – Itas Diatec Trentino

PAST ENCOUNTERS: None

Alessandro Fei (Sisley Belluno): “We are motivated to play a good game against the superb team of Trento. Serve and attack are their main strengths, we’ll have to do a good job of receiving and give our best in dig and block, we need to play a great game. In recent games with Modena and Piacenza, our level of play was very good, we have to step up again and try to stay close to our opponent and make as few mistakes as possible. The support of our fans will be important, I know there will be a lot of people and I am sure the boys will be ready to leave it out on the floor”.

Emanuele Birarelli (Itas Diatec Trentino): “The games of the 26 and 29 at home against Verona will be two important games in our season. We have a chance to finish 2011 on a high by staying top of the league. These two games are not only important for the league table but also to see the progress we’ve made in our game, and see how are the boys. Our target remains the same: be ready for every game despite the fact that we face real tour de force, with one game after another. Belluno will be a good test, they proved to be extremely competitive in the first ten rounds, they can beat anyone. A very tough one for us”.

Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo – Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 65 (40-25 Cuneo)

Wout Wijsmans (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We’re back home after two road games and the one in Trento when we seemed doomed at 2-0 before coming back. This week, we had to focus on the Champions League game against Poitiers, only on Thursday could we start to think about Monza. We have to focus on one game at a time. We’ll need maximum focus, we’ll play for the win as we always do”.

Marco Fenoglio (assistant coach Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “Monday’s game should be a good one. Seeing how they played against Trento, I’d say we’re facing a very difficult encounter. No need to explain how strong is Cuneo. Despite the fact we’re in the middle of the Christmas period, we will remain focused for sure, we’ll try to give it our best shot. We’ll be up against one of the strongest teams in the league but we have what it takes to play a good game”.

Energy Resources San Giustino – Lube Banca Marche Macerata

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 20 (18-2 Macerata)

Andrea Sartoretti (Sport director Energy Resources San Giustino): “Macerata is among the better organised teams of the league and this is a candidate for the league title. Our game is improving, we could see that in recent games, we’ll try to make the court advantage count. Our supporters will give us a great hand as they always do”.

Cristian Savani (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “In recent games San Giustino gathered points against teams of the top half of the league. We’ll play in a small arena, where there is an electric atmosphere. It won’t be easy, but the three points at stake are too important for us, we absolutely want to stay at the top. Winning is the key word, a positive performance would be nice, especially in terms of consistency through the sets”.

Andreoli Latina – Fidia Padova

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 14 (8-6 Latina)

Jakub Jarsosz (Andreoli Latina): “We managed to play face to face with the top teams too when we hit the serve hard. I don’t think there are any easy games in the Italian League. Each game is difficult and you have to give your all to win it. We want all three points, this is the mentality with which we’ll get on court”.

Simone Tiberti (Fidia Padova): “We’re working to reach a target: staying up, and in between there are a lot of difficulties, going through defeats which we are not used to concede after the splendid season we had. In spite of all this, the fans are always close to us, they know we can reach this target only if we stick together. We believe we can do it and we do everything possible game after game”.

Serie A2 Sustenium

Round 16, first return games in the A2.

The last round of 2011 will also be the first return games. The opening game will be Club Italia versus Corigliano. Bonitta’s boys want to do as well as in the first meeting (3-2 win away). Interesting game between Città di Castello and Molfetta, two teams that did very well in the first half of season, both qualified in the Italian Cup A2. Molfetta is fourth, four points above its opponent, sixth. Beaten for the first time home and caught by Castellana at the top, Segrate wants to bounce back against Reggio Emilia, which will present a new line up with newcomers Matteo Paoletti and Eugen Bakumovski. There is the derby between Milan and Cantù, while Loreto versus Perugia was the game that had opened the 2011-12 season. Eighth, Loreto clinched a ticket for the cup thanks to some good home form, gathering four wins in its last four games. As for Perugia, they are third just two points behind the joint leaders as they have taken points in each of their last ten games. Fascinating game between Sora, seventh, and Castellana Grotte, second only due to the set difference. Without Paoletti, who signed for Reggio, Santa Croce travels to Genova as both are out of the cup. All eyes on Isernia, unbeaten in the past four rounds in spite of meeting teams like Città di Castello and Segrate. They will play host to Atripalda, which will travel with new signing Zoltan David, willing to turn things around. Atripalda’s only win goes back to the opening day of the season… against Isernia.
