The Quarter-finals of the 2023 European Volleyball Championships opens today. Three of the five red and whites who attacked the continental event with their respective national teams are still in the running to win the trophy. In fact, between Friday and Sunday, the Round of 16 took place in a single match. In Varna, the France of the Cucine central defender Barthelemy Chinenyeze (13 personal points in the match with 3 blocks) got the better of 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-15) over the Bulgaria of Alex Nikolov, spiker from Lube who bid farewell to the competition by scoring 6 points in the last match, while at the PalaFlorio in Bari the Italy of libero Fabio Balaso (60% reception with 40% perfect) and spiker Mattia Bottolo easily overcame North Macedonia. In Varna the new red and white opposite Adis Lagumdzija, top scorer in the Round of 16 match with 32 personal points, and his Turkey came out with their heads held high after the match lost in the photo finish against Slovenia.

The calendar

The quarter-finals kick off today in Bulgaria, at the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, with the challenges of Slovenia – Ukraine (4.30pm Italian time) and France – Romania (8pm Italian time), while tomorrow, Tuesday 12 September, the spotlight will be on PalaFlorio in Bari which will host Poland – Serbia (6pm) and Italy – Holland (9pm).
