Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia struggles but smiles at the end of an exciting tie-break, playing in the very hot Guaguas Las Palmas arena in the first leg of the CEV Champions League Quarter-Finals, a competition of which the Block Devils are the reigning Champions. After a convincing start and a partial (2-0) that promised an easy victory, Giannelli and his teammates suffered the forceful comeback of the Iberians, led by a Bezerra Souza in form of 20 points and with Las Palmas capable of canceling two match points for the Perugians during the fourth set. In the tie-break (ended 15 to 13 for the Umbrians) the attack of Wassim Ben Tara was decisive (28 points for the Polish opposite hitter): the MVP is Kamil Semeniuk (13 points), with Simone Giannelli also sending Oleh Plotnytskyi (20), Federico Crosato (10) and Roberto Russo (14) into double figures. The return match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1st, at the PalaBarton Energy, with kick-off set for 8:30 PM. Perugia will need to win the match, regardless of the score, to secure a spot in the Final Four in Turin.

Cucine Lube Civitanova’s journey in the Champions League Quarterfinals got off to an uphill start: in front of their home crowd at the Eurosuole Forum, Giampaolo Medei’s team suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Polish side Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie. This result forces Nikolov and his teammates to win the return match (3-0 or 3-1) in a week’s time, also securing the Golden Set to have a chance of reaching the Final Four of the European competition. The reigning European Vice-Champions won the first set and then ran riot in the second, capitalizing on strong performances by Kwolek (10) and Russell (12). Tavares was awarded MVP status, with Zawiercie winning the third set 31-29, first canceling four Lube set points and then capitalizing on an out-of-bounds attack by the home team to celebrate the victory. At home, Civitanova scored double figures for Nikolov (17 points, top scorer) and Loeppky (11). On Thursday, April 2nd, in Poland, Giampaolo Medei’s men will be called upon to make a comeback to qualify among the top four teams in Europe.
