Coach, what kind of season has it been, and how do you see it in the context of such a competitive league?
“It was a complex but extremely significant season. All teams entering a championship aspire to the best possible result: those in the SuperLega aim for the Scudetto, those in A2 aim for promotion. It’s normal for rosters to be built and managed with this in mind. But then you have to deal with reality: out of 14 teams, only one is promoted, eight make the playoffs, and the others are left out.”
So initial expectations aren’t always reflected in the results?
“Exactly. What’s been clear this year is that the final result wasn’t solely tied to the clubs’ legitimate ambitions or the financial investments made. There are teams that, according to insiders, had invested much more than others in the A2 championship—I’m thinking of teams like Taranto, Siena, Aversa, Catania—yet some finished behind us, one was even relegated, and another didn’t occupy a dominant position in the playoff grid.”
So, what’s your interpretation of this unpredictable balance?
“It demonstrates that today’s A2 league is a very tough, highly competitive, and above all unpredictable championship. Intentions, ambitions, and even financial investments aren’t enough to determine the final result. There are so many variables: continuity, injury management, the balance of the team, the moments of the season.”
In light of all this, what is the value of the team’s path?
“The value this season has for us depends entirely on the difficulties we’ve faced, on someone’s shirk of responsibility during the difficult period, on our courage in distancing ourselves from those who wanted to destroy rather than build, on the trust we wanted to place in those who weren’t even considered at the beginning… on the courageous choices we on the staff made during the matches, the same courage I must admit I had in always trying to be the right leader (something far from a given) and on the trust the President and Vice President have placed in me and the entire team group, a trust that is crucial when there are the difficulties we’ve faced.
