In modern volleyball, the setter is much more than just a playmaker. He’s the brains of the team, the one who dictates the tempo, reads situations, and puts each teammate in the best position to perform. If, in addition to his technical ability, he can count on a height of 203 centimeters, his range of action becomes even wider.
Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina completes its playmaker roster with Nicola Mazzon, born in 2003, a profile that would be reductive to simply call a “second setter.” Despite his young age, Mazzon already has an impressive track record, filled with victories, experience, and a strong showing in categories. Born and raised in the province of Treviso, Veneto, Nicola began playing almost by chance, like many children. “I started playing volleyball at eight or nine years old in a small town in the province of Treviso.” From there, however, his talent quickly emerged, so much so that at just thirteen years old, he received a call from Volley Treviso, one of the organizations historically most committed to developing young players. “I completed my entire youth career in Treviso, up to the Under-19s.” And it was precisely in the final youth category that a moment of satisfaction arrived that was destined to leave its mark: “True, that year I also won the award for best setter at the National Finals.” An award that confirmed the qualities of a boy who was already being closely observed by the experts. And indeed, the leap to professionalism came shortly thereafter. “I began my journey in Serie A with San Donà in A3. The following year, we won promotion with Fano from A3 to A2, then I moved to Sabaudia in A3 and finally I played my first season in A2 with Porto Viro.”
