In China, libero Fabio Balaso, spiker Mattia Bottolo, and middle blocker Giovanni Gargiulo defeated Slovenia 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18) in the semifinals, with Ferdinando De Giorgi’s men able to turbocharge the third set. Balaso, the key player on the second line, and Gargiulo, who scored nine points, were the starters. Bottolo also had some play in the fourth set.
