Trentino and Macerata did not flater even though they faced two of the most in-form teams of the moment. The Italian champs left Pineto no chance, while Macerata had to suffer a bit more, as the table remained unchanged. Verona got off to a good start threatening Macerata with some good serves and blocks. Macerata got back in it with Martino and Swiderski. The guests lost their way in the second but showed character again in the third. Sottile’s tactical serve sent the host 8-4 up but Verona reacted and led 11-8. Giuliani’s team could not find the usual consistency and suffered against an outstanding Igor Omrcen, MVP, who sealed the deal with three bombs on the serve.

There was no surprise as Piacenza came back from Forli with the points. The MVP Wout Wijmans was not totally convincing but Cuneo did bounce back after their loss against Verona by defeating Modena in straight sets.

Padova suffered another KO in the Venetian derby, as Treviso won 3-1. Alessandro Fei, MVP, led the way with 21 points.

“We did not manage to impose our game the way we wanted. It was tough, we knew it would be, Piacenza is strong, but we certainly could have done more. It’s a shame we did not manage to express our game again today”.

Leonell Marshall (Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza): “We’re satisfied with the result. We did well, we played focused and limited the mistakes. That’s always really important for us, and above all we wanted to find the confirmation after the good performance against Modena. I’m glad about my own performance too after having been out because of a stiff neck”.

We had to divide the preparation last week thinking of the Champions League as well and training with the Mikasa balls. We’re facing a real tour de force but we’re ready for any challenge”.

Paolo Montagnani (Framasil Pineto): “We’re already happy with what we managed until now, having gathered 8 points in the first 6 games. I really can’t criticise any of my players tonight. Trento put a lot of pressure on Rivaldo and Dentinho, our main men in attack. Let€s forget about the defeat and look ahead”.

Martin Lebl (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “
After the defeat against Trento, it was important to get back to victory straight away and keep building what we started. We had lapses today too, but the most important thing is that there were very few. We’ll also make our debut in the Champions League this week, and we can’t wait to start this new adventure. Fortunately, we saved a bit of energy”.

Daniele Sottile (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We did not take advantage of the opportunities we created during the game. We made some mistakes in the clutch moments, which Macerata didn’t. We lacked a bit of everything: the serve, block, dig and attack. We knew it was going to be difficult to play our volleyball, but we should have done more”.

Giordano Mattera (Antonveneta Padova): “Padova eventually played real volleyball, which it had not done all season so far. After the Perugia defeat, we became more of a team, mentally too. Shame we did not win another set given that it was a close call”.

Davide Saitta (Sisley Treviso): “We knew Padova was a strong team but we did a good job of playing always at a high level of concentration. I’m personally happy with my performance and I thank the team and coach for the faith they put in me”.

SERIE A2 TIM

Santa Croce beaten

Santa Croce’s undefeated record ended in Loreto. The game was a real battle, as three of the four sets were decided with the minimum margin. Bassano make it five with a 3-1 home win at the expense of Catania, meaning it goes top of the league with Santa Croce and Bologna.

Mantova came back from Città di Castello with a win and forgets about recent worries. In a remake of the B1 playoff final, Bologna took its revenge, sweeping Castelfidardo 3-0. Gioia del Colle obtained a positive result too, beating Rome at the tie-break, while Isernia registered its second consecutive win, this time against Cavriago.
