SuperLega UnipolSai
Round 12 recap
The SuperLega takes a break till January 17
Cup quarters on December 22 and January 14

These first return league games will be the last before a break dedicated to the national teams and the Olympic Games qualifications (Italy is already qualified for Rio 2016). The league will be back on January 17. On the other hand, there will be the Italian Cup quarter-final first leg on Tuesday 22 December.

SuperLega UnipolSai round 12 results (first return games)

Ninfa Latina-Tonazzo Padova 3-2 (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-12); Exprivia Molfetta-DHL Modena 0-3 (25-27, 22-25, 20-25); Calzedonia Verona-Sir Safety Conad Perugia 3-2 (27-25, 25-14, 25-27, 23-25, 15-13); Diatec Trentino-Gi Group Monza 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23); Cucine Lube Banca Marche Civitanova-CMC Romagna 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17); Revivre Milano-LPR Piacenza 2-3 (25-22, 27-25, 23-25, 18-25, 12-15)

EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA – DHL MODENA 0-3 (25-27, 22-25, 20-25) -EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA: Candellaro 7, Randazzo 8, Mariella, Del Vecchio 2, Barone 4, De Pandis (L), Porcelli, Hierrezuelo 5, Fedrizzi 7, Hernandez Ramos 15. DNP Kaczynski, Spadavecchia. Coach. Montagnani.

DHL MODENA: Mossa De Rezende 3, Donadio (L), Rossini (L), Ngapeth 14, Nikic 10, Piano 1, Bossi, Saatkamp 7, Vettori 17, Sighinolfi. DNP Petric, Soli, Casadei, Sartoretti. Coach. Lorenzetti.

No breakthrough for Molfetta this time around. Unlike in the opening game of the season, it surrendered in straight sets to the league leader. Vettori shined with 59% in attack and 17 points and was named MVP. Bruninho distributed with class while the team registered a nice 60% in reception. MVP Luca Vettori (DHL Modena)

Luca Vettori (DHL Modena): “We did a great job today of coming back in the first set, we showed character. We handled the other two sets well too, we imposed our game. This is a tough place to go to here. Winning in this gym will give us confidence, and we want to try to go as far as we can get”.

Daniele De Pandis (Exprivia Molfetta): “We did not serve well at all today and that has always been our main strength at home. We struggled in attack too, but credit to Modena who really made it hard for us. We’ll now focus on Tuesday’s cup game, we’ll give everything like we’ve done tonight. We’ll be up against a team who wants to take revenge on its last two losses in our PalaPoli arena”.

CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE CIVITANOVA – CMC ROMAGNA 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE CIVITANOVA: Fei 13, Juantorena 11, Vitelli 2, Stankovic 11, Christenson 3, Cester 11, Grebennikov (L), Cebulj 10. DNP Gabriele, Parodi, Miljkovic, Corvetta, Podrascanin. Coach. Blengini.

CMC ROMAGNA: Mengozzi 6, Ricci 12, Cavanna, Zappoli 5, Della Lunga 3, Van Garderen 8, Koumentakis, Goi (L), Torres 8, Boswinkel, Bari (L), Perini De Aviz 1. DNP Polo. Coach. Kantor.

Two months ago, Civitanova had needed five sets and over two hours to overcome CMC Romagna’s challenge. This time, three sets were enough as Blengini’s men bounced back from the come-back tie-break defeat against Trento. Thanks to this top quality display, Civitanova remains second just two points behind Modena. The hosts’ secret weapon was the blocking in the first two sets, while the third was no more than a stroll in the park. MVP Enrico Cester (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata)

Gianlorenzo Blengini (coach Cucine Lube Banca Marche Civitanova): “We played a good game. We obtained a very positive result, which is what matters the most, but the boys played some quality volleyball too except for few episodes here and there when our opponents made great plays”.

Waldo Kantor (coach Cmc Romagna): “I am happy with what we did in the first two sets, we managed to hold on strong against a better team than us. Shame that in the clutch time, we made too many mistakes. And you cannot give anything away to a team like Civitanova, because you pay cash. In the third set, the team surrendered mentally as well as technically, we conceded too many blocks”.

NINFA LATINA – TONAZZO PADOVA 3-2 (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-12) – NINFA LATINA: Krumins, Mattei 1, Sottile 2, Sket 15, Ferenciac, Romiti (L), Tailli 4, Hirsch 31, Yosifov 11, Rossi 5, Maruotti 17. Coach. Placì.

TONAZZO PADOVA: Cook 6, Orduna, Giannotti 18, Balaso (L), Bassanello, Quiroga 15, Averill 11, Berger 24, Diamantini 13. DNP Leoni, Volpato, Lazzaretto. Coach. Baldovin.

Latina played with pride to get the crowd on its feet as it clinched the game against a feisty Padova team at the tie-break. The game seemed it could end in three sets as the hosts went 2-0 up but Padova found its way back. Then, Mattei and Yosifov got injured and it seemed to slip out of Latina’s hands. But instead, Placì and co found one last breath to make the breakthrough with Hirsch as middle blocker and Sket outside hitter. MVP Simon Hirsch (Ninfa Latina)

Camillo Placì (coach Ninfa Latina): “The experience has nothing to do with age. We did what we had to do. Today we threw our last card on the table and it went our way. We won as a team, we did not win thanks to my substitutions. I’ve seen a great will to win and that had the fans up for it”.

Valerio Baldovin (coach Tonazzo Padova): “These are points in the bag, but we’re disappointed with our poor start to the fifth set. When some players get injured, two things can happen: Latina got motivation out of it, while we faded and wasted too many opportunities. At the start of the first set, there was a lot of confusion on our side of the net. We really had to step up to get back in the game”.

CALZEDONIA VERONA – SIR SAFETY CONAD PERUGIA 3-2 (27-25, 25-14, 25-27, 23-25, 15-13) – CALZEDONIA VERONA: Zingel 12, Kovacevic 22, Pesaresi (L), Gitto, Lecat 3, Spirito, Baranowicz, Bellei 12, Sander 23, Anzani 14, Bucko 2. DNP Frigo, Starovic. Coach. Giani.

SIR SAFETY CONAD PERUGIA: Buti 5, De Cecco 4, Kaliberda 18, Giovi (L), Russell 12, Dimitrov, Tzioumakas, Atanasijevic 26, Fanuli, Birarelli 3. DNP Fromm, Elia, Franceschini. Coach. Kovac.

Destiny has it that Verona and Perugia always go the distance. Just like last season, this one turned into a five-set marathon. This was another spectacular encounter, exciting, which remained undecided until the last touch. Starovic was not ready on time for Verona (back problem), and they soon had to do without Bellei and in the end lost Sander too. MVP Michele Baranowicz (Calzedonia Verona).

Michele Baranowicz (Calzedonia Verona): “We had a good game. We played well in spite of being without our starting outside hitter. We always have to adapt because of physical problems but today we got a great result. We have to forget about this game though and start focusing on Tuesday’s encounter”.

Slobodan Kovac (Coach Sir Safety Conad Perugia): “I tried to convey more aggressiveness to the boys compared to the first two sets, even if the first finished with the minimum margin. Verona plays excellent volleyball, and they have two superb spikers in Sander and Kovacevic, who we struggled to contain. But when our serve started to go in, things have changed”.

DIATEC TRENTINO – GI GROUP MONZA 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23) – DIATEC TRENTINO: Antonov, Bratoev 2, De Angelis, Giannelli 1, Lanza 16, Solé 9, Djuric 21, Colaci (L), Urnaut 8, Mazzone 5. DNP Nelli, Mazzone, Van De Voorde. Coach. Stoytchev.

GI GROUP MONZA: Sala, Daldello, Galliani 11, Mercorio, Rizzo (L), Botto 13, Verhees 10, Beretta 6, Zanatta Buiatti 31, Rousseaux 2. DNP Brunetti, Jovovic, Gao. Coach. Vacondio.

Trento remained unbeaten at home in this last SuperLega game of 2015. Monza went there ready for the fight and they took the early initiatives but in the end they had to bow out. Trentino’s serve and reception was not up to its usual standard but the Italian champions found other weapons as effective to come out on top. Djuric scored 21 points (51%, 3 blocks) and was named MVP.

Mitar Djuric (Diatec Trentino): “The only thing that matters are the three points. Monza played very well, they made it very hard for us but it’s tough to play at your best every three days. Still, it’s important never to go under a certain level and be patient. We have to get rid of those moments in which we get ourselves in trouble”.

Andrea Galliani (Gi Group Team Monza): “Shame, given how it went tonight, we could have grabbed at least a point. Except for the first set, in which we played excellent volleyball, details in the third and fourth prevented us from taking those sets in spite of some advantage. We limited ourselves. But now we have to start over with character in the tough upcoming Cup game on Tuesday at home against Modena”.

REVIVRE MILANO – LPR PIACENZA 2-3 (25-22, 27-25, 23-25, 18-25, 12-15) – REVIVRE MILANO: Milushev 26, Alletti 15, Sbertoli 1, Skrimov 14, Russomanno Dos Santos 12, Tosi (L), De Togni 9, Rivan (L), Baranek 3, Boninfante 1, Burgsthaler, Marretta. DNP Gavenda. Coach. Monti.

LPR PIACENZA: Coscione 3, Kohut 13, Ter Horst 2, Perrin 26, Sedlacek 1, Patriarca 11, Lampariello (L), Zlatanov 14, Luburic 17, Tencati, Tavares Rodrigues. DNP Papi, Cottarelli. Coach. Giuliani.

Piacenza eventually came out on top in the fifth set of a tight encounter. MVP John Gordon Perrin (LPR Piacenza)

Luca Monti (coach Revivre Milano): “In spite of our initial advantage, then all our flaws came out. We started to play with fear and in the clutch time we lacked that determination we had in the first two sets. We lacked that will to win”.

Stefano Patriarca (LPR Piacenza): “The league table said we were the bottom two teams but I think people have seen a quality game today with two teams showing will to win. It was important for us to get a win to get back on the right track, it will give us a boost. We showed character and pride, which are aspects we lacked the most until now”.
