All the games of the blue group were played this Saturday night and now we know the teams qualified for the Del Monte Italian Cup quarter-finals. This will be played in one single in-or-out game scheduled on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 December.VBC Mondovì, Monini Spoleto, Centrale del Latte McDonald’s Brescia and Ceramica Globo Civita Castellana, are the qualified teams of this group in that order. We will know the quarter-final match-ups tomorrow when the games of the white group will be played.
According the the formula, the top four teams of each group qualify for the quarter-finals. The semi-finals will be played on December 29, while the final is scheduled on January 29 in the Unipol Arena in Casalecchio di Reno (near Bologna). This will be just before the SuperLega Cup final.
While the top four of the blue group was already known, their final position remained unpredictable. Indeed, Mondovì, Spoleto and Brescia were all tied in first place, with Civita Castellana just one point behind.
Mondovì had the better of Cantù 3-1 and made sure of the first place thanks to an extra victory on Spoleto. Barisciani’s men made it in spite of a severe injury to Matteo Paoletti at the end of the first set. They will take on the fourth of the white group in the cup quarters.
Spoleto dominated Montecchio Maggiore 3-0 but has to make do with second place. Brescia was defeated 3-1 in Bergamo but still remained third. Bergamo caught Civita Castellana in the standings but remained fifth because they have less victories. Civita Castellana remained fourth in spite of losing against the bottom team of the group in Castellana Grotte. Finally, there was a comfortable win for Reggio Emilia, even if they’re out of the cup. They were without head coach James Costi who had to resign because of serious personal matters. Assistant coach Zambolin took over against Grottazzolina, who had to deal with injuries and flu.
