There are champions who, after having won so much, decide to stop. And then there’s Alexander Berger, who has chosen to start over: specifically from Belluno, where he arrived last March. But in a short time, he has won over his teammates, staff, and fans. Having turned thirty-seven on September 27th, the Austrian spiker has an entire career lived at the highest level under his belt. Among them, he also won a championship in Perugia, where he was a key figure. But it’s not his track record that defines him. It’s rather his attitude: that of an athlete who never stops learning, listening, and putting himself out there. “My back is fine now,” he says. “After the hernia I had in 2018, I always pay the utmost attention. But I’m happy and very grateful to our medical staff for the excellent treatment. Overall, my physical condition is good: every day and every training session helps me improve more and more.” He missed the first three preseason tests, but made up for lost time with method and the usual precision of someone who knows that fitness, in volleyball, is a delicate balance between strength and agility. “It was an intense period, but necessary,” he explains, “to build a good foundation and allow us to maintain our form throughout the season. Overall, I found an interesting group, a good mix of experienced players and motivated youngsters, with a lot of potential.”
