The 3,500-strong PalaPanini crowd and a strong team performance propelled Valsa Group Modena to a 3-1 victory over Cucine Lube Civitanova in the “classic” match that opened the 10th round of the Regular Season. While the other teams await action between Sunday and Monday, the Emilian team has jumped to fourth place in the standings, overtaking Piacenza, fifth with 18 points, and Civitanova, which slipped to sixth place with 17 points and is set to reach the halfway point without an away win. The first two sets were fiercely contested, with the home team winning in a photo finish, while the second set saw a comeback from 22-24 to 26-24 thanks to three late blocks by Mati. The third set was dominated by the red and whites, but Giampaolo Medei’s men fell apart in the next one, in the crucial phase of the match, paving the way for Alberto Giuliani’s team, who finished with 15 blocks and found in Sanguinetti (14 points and 6 aces overall), later awarded MVP, the guiding light to victory from the beginning of the set. Also in double figures were Davyskiba (15), Buchegger (10) and Porro (10). Among the guests, Nikolov (20 points) finished as the top scorer and fought as hard as he could, while Loeppky added 14 points.
