Sports in Taranto are experiencing a moment of great suffering, both financially and in terms of the availability of facilities. The great opportunity of the Mediterranean Games, therefore, if not adequately seized, risks making the management of team and individual sports in Taranto even more problematic.

The proposal to establish a body that can contribute to helping Taranto sports is, therefore, certainly to be supported, but it cannot only concern 11-a-side football and men’s basketball.

We listened to what was communicated by the Commissioner for the Mediterranean Games Massimo Ferrarese at the end of the meeting with Parliamentarians and Regional Councilors to illustrate the Sports Foundation project.

The initiative to the Provincial CONI, to the Associations and Sports Clubs of the City, seemed interesting and we think that such an unprecedented and innovative tool for our territory and our city, should have been born long ago as a form of support and closeness to all sports notoriously in difficulty, due to the precariousness of the economic and entrepreneurial fabric almost completely absent in supporting the city’s sport, moreover in great difficulty in identifying alternative structures to the sports halls and other unusable structures for the next championships precisely because of the adaptation for the Mediterranean Games.

We have gathered from the words of Mr. Commissioner Ferrarese the will to support, first and foremost, 11-a-side football and men’s basketball because they are at risk of disappearing from the immediate future of the city’s sporting scene.

For all other sports and clubs, attention could be futuristic but, at the moment, uncertain.

In light of this, the Sports Clubs that are signatories to this document communicate that, having learned on March 24 from the outcome of such a qualified meeting that in Taranto, in order to be concretely helped by large companies and large state commissioners, one must first disappear, this being the case, they will reconsider their possible registration to their respective championships.

In a city where we have just learned that in order to improve, one must disappear, we will ensure that the Foundation announced by Massimo Ferrarese can take care of all the sporting realities of the territory in such a way that this new entity can continue to carry the name of Taranto high throughout the country and throughout the world.

Instead, we believe that the occasion should be propitious to build something important, a network of mutual support for the real and concrete relaunch of team sports without neglecting the companies that count on the individuality of the various athletes.

Likewise, if there are resources to be allocated immediately for this purpose, they should be distributed in an adequate and proportional manner across all the sports organizations that operate in the Ionian territory, according to clear and transparent criteria and that also refer to the respective categories and championships to which they belong.
