For the “bomber” jersey, Allianz Milano is banking on a new European talent. President Lucio Fusaro and general and sporting director Fabio Lini have chosen Basil Dermaux as the opposite hitter. The Belgian is one of the most exciting prospects of the new continental generation. Born in 2003 in Izegem and raised as a volleyball player in Roeselare, Dermaux comes to the SuperLega from the Belgian league, where he was awarded “Player of the Year” for two consecutive seasons. Just last night, his Knack Roeselare team fell 3-1 in game 4 to Greenyard Maaseik (former Modena player Sil Meijs, who has switched from setter to opposite hitter, and former Siena setter Finoli) in the championship final in front of 3,000 spectators at the Steengoed Arena. Basil’s 18 points weren’t enough to overturn a series-clinching 2-0 lead. After five consecutive titles, Roeselare thus closed a cycle of domestic successes with qualification for the Champions League.
