What unfolded this morning in the council chamber of Grottazzolina Town Hall was a silent pact of steel between past and future. More than an institutional event, it was a journey down memory lane, a fifty-five-year-long story that began almost as a joke in the spring of 1971 and has now become one of the most respected clubs in Italian volleyball.
The packed hall, despite the summer heat inviting far beyond, was the most beautiful snapshot of how much this sport continues to represent for the local community. Because in Grottazzolina, volleyball is more than just a team: it is identity, a sense of belonging, a shared memory.
And so it was that the most intense moment of the morning came at the opening. The opening of the conference, moderated by journalist and club communications manager Fabio Paci, was all about six men who, probably without realizing it, changed the town’s sporting history forever.
Edmondo Bonfigli, Doriano Romantini, Alteriano Renzi, Anselmo Bacalini, Manuel Maria Bacalini, and Luigino Ferrini received a commemorative plaque in recognition of their roles in the first official Grotte volleyball match, played in 1971 against Rapagnano and won 2-0.
