He crossed Europe with a ball in his hand and a bag full of dreams. But inside that bag there has always been something more: the soul of an explorer, the desire to discover, the curiosity to understand. Alexander Berger is not just a player, he is a traveler. Of volleyball, of course. But also of life. And he opens the doors of his world, waiting to take the field for game 1 of the playoff semifinal between Belluno Volley and JV Gioia del Colle, scheduled for Sunday 6 April, at the VHV Arena.

You were born in Aichkirchen, a small Austrian town: how much did your hometown influence your personal and volleyball growth?

«Aichkirchen is a village of about 500 people, so everyone knows everyone. I had several options for my free time: I could play sports, join the volunteer firefighters or the music orchestra. Some of my friends even ran two activities at the same time, but my brother (who is 13 months older than me) and I dedicated ourselves only to sports. Maybe because we were inspired by our parents. Being a small town, the nice thing is that everyone is ready to lend a hand, while in a big city sometimes you don’t even know your neighbors. And in some ways this helped me in volleyball, because we are a group of athletes who play together and have to help each other to improve and achieve our goals”.

If you hadn’t become a volleyball player, what would you have done in life?

“I was lucky enough to turn two hobbies into my job.
