There are only two days left until the season-ending event: the CEV Champions League Final Four will take place on Saturday, May 16th and Sunday, May 17th, at the Inalpi Arena in Turin. Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia (the only Italian team still in the running) is ready to defend last year’s title.
The Umbrians will face Polish side PGE Project Warszawa, having faced them twice before (in the 2019/20 season). Previous meetings between the Block Devils and Polish teams favor Angelo Lorenzetti’s men (7 wins out of 10), with the most important meeting dating back to the last Champions League final, a victory against Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie (who, along with Ziraat Ankara, were in this year’s Final Four). Perugia, aiming for their third ever final (2024/25 and 2016/17), intends to emulate Trento’s feat, which won Europe’s premier club competition in three consecutive editions, from 2008/09 to 2010/11.
SIR, after securing their third Scudetto, which added to their Club World Cup win in December and the Super Cup in Trieste in March, are now chasing a fourth trophy. As mentioned, PGE Project Warsaw will be on the path of Simone Giannelli and his teammates.
Among the Polish players and in general, the two-day Turin event will feature several familiar faces admired in Italy playing for SuperLega clubs: for PGE Project Warsaw, spikers Kevin Tillie (who played for Modena, Ravenna, and Cisterna) and Brandon Koppers (one season in Ravenna), as well as opposite hitter Linus Weber, who spent time in Milan and Padua. Polish spiker Bartosz Bednorz, who played in Modena and was injured during the 3rd Place Final of the PlusLiga (Polish league), may not be available for the match.
For Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, the recent Polish champion, Aaron Russell, a key figure for Perugia (who won the 2017/18 Scudetto), Piacenza, and Trento during his Italian seasons, will be present; middle blocker Jurii Gladyr, who played for Siena for a year; Portuguese setter Miguel Tavares Rodrigues (two seasons at Piacenza); and Polish middle blocker and team captain Mateusz Bieniek, who spent a year with Civitanova. Meanwhile, playing for Turkish side Ziraat Bankkart Ankara are Dutch opposite hitter Nimir Abdel-Aziz, who spent much of his career playing in the SuperLega with Belluno, Cuneo, Milan, Modena, and Trento; French spiker Trevor Clevenot, who played for Piacenza and Milan; and Dutch hammer hitter Dick Kooy, who thrilled the fans of Modena, Lube, Piacenza, and Trento.
