Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza overcame the obstacle of Spanish team Soria with a 3-1 victory in front of their home crowd and qualified for the CEV Cup Playoffs, the round preceding the Quarterfinals. Bovolenta and his teammates won the first two sets by a comfortable margin, enough to advance to the next stage.
Leon, who replaced Bovolenta after the first two sets, put in a convincing performance, finishing the match as Piacenza’s top scorer, tied with Brazilian Bergmann with 13 total points.
Today evening (Thursday, January 29th), Piacenza’s next opponent will be decided between Finnish team Akaa Volley and Polish team JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel, third-place finishers in last year’s Champions League and winners of the first leg 3-1. The Polish team features an experienced lineup, featuring French Olympic champion setter Ben Toniutti, opposite hitter Kaczmarek, and two four-pointers Kujundzic and Gierzot.
Coach Boninfante’s team will now focus on their SuperLega matches: on Sunday, February 1st, at 6:00 PM, they will arrive at PalaBancaSport Cisterna, looking for relegation points. Next up will be the Del Monte® Coppa Italia, where Piacenza will face Italian champions Itas Trentino in the first semifinal, scheduled for 3:30 PM.
