The unceasing battle to finish top before the break between Macerata and Trentino had a thrilling epilogue with two tie-breaks. In the end, Macerata prevailed thanks to another great team effort in Piacenza. Leonel Marshall’s 37 points, a record this season, and the come back of Zlatanov were not enough for the hosts. Meanwhile, Martina Franca put an end to Trentino’s unbeatable record, which had been lasting since the 3rd of April. Macerata’s PalaFontescodella and Cuneo’s gym are the only fortress left. Martina’s win over the Italian Champs represents a great breakthrough after Marco Bonitta’s resignation. Cuneo took third place thanks to an improving Vladimir Nikolov and Peter Platenik. Treviso keeps showing signs of improvement, but it paid the price for fading in the fourth.  Verona proved dominant away at Forli, taking revenge as they had been beaten by Forli in the A2 playoffs final last season. Thanks to this win, Alberto Giuliani moves up the table again, they are now sixth. Thanks to a 3-1 over Pineto, Padova is definitely back to life in this league. However, the big win of the day goes to Vibo Valentia, who surprised Montichiari in its own house 3-1 and snatch its ticket to the Italian Cup Final Eight. Gulinelli’s men had to get all three points against one of the most in-form teams and hope for Perugia not to take any points at home against Modena. And that all came incredibly true. Simeonov and co confirmed their recent progress taking the three points, as coach Zanini could not have dreamt for a better start. Indeed, Perugia was surprised by the appearance of Lee and Sartoretti in the starting line up. Brazilian Sidão had an explosive performance with 18 points and 7 blocks.

Gianluca Durante (Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza): “It’s been a hard fought game, as we expected. We lacked a bit of cynicism to seal the deal. Zlatanov’s entry gave us great motivation, even though that was not enough. He’s a great leader, he spur the other ones on and the enthusiasm the fans showed when he came on is a testimony”.

Ferdinando De Giorgi (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “It’s been a difficult but nice game, played at a high level. We had a good team performance, even though we still have some work on. I’m satisfied with that first half of championship. We have good material on which to work, but there are still things to improve”.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO – STAMPLAST MARTINA FRANCA 2-3 (25-21, 22-25, 27-25, 23-25, 12-15)

Cosimo Marco Piscopo (Itas Diatec Trentino): “Many factors contributed to this bitter end: bad luck, injuries, a sub-par performance and above all, the great performance by Martina Franca. It’s a bad loss but to be honest, there wasn’t much more we could do, because we played set after set with a different team and we struggled. Let’s forget about it and try to be ready for Sunday’s game at Forli”.

Valdir Sequeira (Stamplast Martina Franca): “We have been training well for weeks, despite the difficulty and all the turmoil. I knew we could do something positive. We did not think of the thing that occurred during the week and we pulled together. In the fourth set, with Trento mistake in the line up (De Paola instead of Piscopo) helped us and we started to believe we could make it”.

Giuseppe Patriarca (Yoga Forli): ‘It did not go well at all tonight against Verona. They proved to be superior in every area of the game, and that made the difference. In the crowd, though, I think they’ve seen we put everything we had, but obviously that’s not enough right now’.

Rob Bontje (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We’ve led the game from start to finish. We did a good job of putting to practice what we did in training this week, forcing the serve at the beginning. We’ve all played well, even though we have to say that Lasko really stood out”.

Emanuele Zanini (Trenkwalder Modena): “I tried to change the team, shuffling my cards and trying to surprise the opponent. But then Perugia gave us a hand and everything went well”.

Mikko Esko (Acqua Paradiso Gabeca Montichiari): “We made it to the Italian Cup but all the points are important. Tonight we had the opportunity to win 3, but we lost. Now, we have to focus already on the next game. Anyway, I saw Vibo Valentia was really up for it tonight, they were surely more motivated than us and they deserved to win”.

Ventceslav Simeonov  (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “We’re extremely satisfied because, more than the Italian Cup, our target was to get some points because the table is very tight, a victory or a defeat makes a big difference. I’m happy with the fact we won in the house of a team that played great volleyball lately. We might have wanted the win more than them today”.

Bruno Bagnoli (Antonveneta Padova): “It’s not been the greatest of games, but it was important to get the three points and we managed to do so. In the first set, the y dictated the play, but then we reacted with character thanks to a good performance from Kromm and Raymaekers who, when he came in, was very active. Now, we’re right back on track before the return games”.

Paolo Montagnani (Framasil Pineto): “It’s a shame we did not take any point after winning the first set. We’re going trough tough times right now, but we have to keep our composure and play with confidence, the way we can. It’s the only way to gain some points”.
