The three Italians faired well in their respective European competitions. In the champions League, Cuneo obtained an exceptional 3-1 victory in Russia against Belgorod. Another trip to Russia is ahead though as Grbic and co have been drawn in the playoffs 6 with Dinamo Moscow, which knocked out the French team of Tours.
Tie-breaks are going well for Treviso which, without Fei, won for the second consecutive times in the fifth set against Sete. A game of ups and downs but coach Piazza could count on good performances from the young Maruotti and Kovar to avoid the Golden set. In the Cev Cup semi-final, Treviso will meet the Polish side of Asseco Resovia Rzeszow, where the Italians Baranowicz and Cernic play. The team is also composed of German spiker Grozer (in Loreto at the end of 2007-08), and coach Ljubomir Travica, father of Monza’s setter Dragan Travica.
Semi-final ticket as well for Macerata in the Challenge Cup as it beat for the second time running the Russians of Surgut. 3-2 winners in the first leg, Macerata was inspired by Igor Ormcen and Valerio Vermiglio to a 3-1 victory. The next opponent for Berruto’s team will be the Greeks of EA Patron Lux, which got rid of Selver Tallin.
