Macerata and Trentino had finished last season on a breathtaking tie-break and they began where they had left off with another fifth set that gave the title to Macerata again. The Del Monte MVP award went to Ivan Zaytsev on his debut game for his new club. The fifth set was tight until Kovar scored two consecutive points and Stankovic found a spectacular block on Djuric (11-8). There were then three match point after a missed serve by the Greek middle blocker. Macerata needed only one as Stokr sent it out.
Alberto Giuliani (coach Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “Zaytsev also received well tonight, it looks as though this scheme is starting to work out fine, we’re happy with that as well. This is a result that gives us confidence for the future. I think there has been some good plays, especially when the ball was on our court, maybe thanks to the ball itself as well”.
Cristian Savani (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “That’s a great start to the season, we had a little problem during pre-season so we were not that certain of what we could do. We had played some friendlies against teams that were a level under Trento. This was our first game against a tough team and it went well”.
Dragan Travica (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “I am thrilled with this victory: This has been a real battle like in the league final and Italian cup final. We have started this season where we had left off the last. We did a good job in the clutch moments in a beautiful arena in which I think the fans had a good time. It’s been a great day for this sport”.
Ivan Zaytsev (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “I am extremely happy because playing for Macerata, for trophies and win them is really a great feeling. I was tense but not overwhelmed. The boys did a great job in this tough game, the first of a long season. A victory I dedicate to the club, which took a chance on me, and to the fans who follow this team with great passion. I’m enjoying this new role, I don’t think about it too much, I just try to do my best without making too much damage. We’re enjoying this way of playing”.
Radostin Stoytchev (coach Itas Diatec Trentino): “They have been better with balls away from the net, this was the difference. We want to win every competition we’re in, we definitely did not underestimate the task we faced. We will work harder, and we need to learn to keep our feet on the ground, to recognize our weaknesses and get better”.
Matey Kaziyski (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We played poorly in the last rallies of the game because Macerata went for it much more than we did and everything went in for them. They took more risks in the important moment while we have waited too much and did not manage to get organized better. Now we have to focus on our next commitment although this is difficult after such a defeat”.
Osmany Juantorena (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We’re not hundred percent of our potential yet but that’s no excuse. We have lost. A couple of plays made the difference. Congratulations to Macerata, they took some risks at the serve, they did miss some but put us under pressure”.
Emanuele Birarelli (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We could have won it but we wasted too many opportunities in the fifth, too many gifts. This was our first event and soon we’ll have the World Club Championships, we’ll need more focus”.
