Cuneo made history. They qualified for the Champions League final for the first time ever at the expense of the polish side of Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle. In the final Cuneo will take on the hosts of Novosibrisk, who disposed of Kazan in the all-Russian semi-final. Cuneo was led by the trio Sokolov-Wijsmans-Ngpateh who combined for 61 points. De Pandis had an excellent performance too.

In the tie-break, Rossi was sent on court as Sokolov was lined up as true outside hitter. And Cuneo got off to an excellent start, precisely thanks to Rossi (3-0). The gap increased to 8-3 on a spike from Sokolov who was doing a lot of damage. Cuneo was determined and playing well, they would not be pegged back and could celebrate a historical moment.

Roberto Piazza (coach Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “I am extremely proud of my boys, they played a good second and third set, but I also regret the occasions we failed to convert in the first set. Excellent performance on the serve and we did well on high-ball situations. We’ll have a very tough game tomorrow against Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, we’ll need our best volleyball to have a chance”.

Wout Wijsmans (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We can be proud of this victory because we had to overcome tough moments. We did well in the second and third set, then we started off rather poorly in the fourth, we did recover in the end but we lost it anyway. But we showed all our character and motivation in the tie-break”.
