Cuneo went agonizingly close from lifting the trophy aloft but in the end had to surrender against the host after a battle lasted over 2 hours and a half. The Russians, who needed 4 match balls, are directly qualified for next October’s World Club Championships. Daniele De Pandis was named best libero of the competition. 11-14 down in the tie-break, Cuneo managed to cancel out three match points to tie it at 14 all. But then no block was ready for Biryukov’s next attack and Ngapeth was blocked.

Daniele De Pandis (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “I am really disappointed because we had our chance. Losing on one point is really difficult to take in. We’ll get away from it all for a couple of days now. If we can play like we’ve done recently, I’m sure we’ll be able to trouble Trento and Macerata in the league. I dedicate my award of best libero to my family, my girlfriend and all the people that follow me and love me”.

Nikola Grbic (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We lost the game in the second set, when we had a couple of opportunities. In my opinion, we could have won it there. Details have made the difference. I am very happy for De Pandis, for the award he was given. I am sure this will be a useful experience for him in the future. Now we have to look ahead, in a couple of weeks there will be the playoffs, and that won’t be easy. If we play with our heads like we’ve done recently and in the Final Four, we will be able to give food for thoughts to all the others”.

Emanuel Kohut (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We played a great game, I think the fans enjoyed it. We’re not going home with the cup, it’s true, but I think this experience can help the team for the future, especially the young players. We never gave up, we went very close, we lost because of a couple of missed opportunities. We all put maximum effort in, all our heart, unfortunately that was not enough”.
