Europe
Verona takes Challenge Cup first leg

2016 Challenge Cup

Four thousand fans filled the PalaOlimpia to live the emotions and entertainment of the Challenge Cup final first leg. Verona took the early initiatives and went 2-0 up but Fakel Novi Urengoy fought back. The Russians managed to force a tie-break but Verona has become very used to the marathons (this was the 14th) and found its rhythm again when it mattered most. A big win for Giani’s men who will play the return leg on Sunday 3 April. They will take off to Moscow today, then will stay in the Russian capital until Saturday when they will head to Novi Urengoy, the Siberian city where the climatic conditions will be the first obstacle to overcome. In order to win their first ever European trophy, the Italians will need a win on any result. If the hosts were to win 3-2, it would be down to a Golden Set to 15. The Russian will lift the trophy aloft if they win on any other score.

Final first leg result:

Calzedonia Verona (ITA) – Fakel Novi Urengoy (RUS) 3-2 (25-18, 27-25, 18-25, 23-25, 15-13)

Return leg:
