Serie A2 TIM

La M. Roma Volley centra la promozione in Serie A1

In 2000 at this time of the year, Roma won the League title thanks to a 3-0 victory in game 3 against Modena. Captain Adriano Paolucci remembers it with emotion after yesterday’s triumph in the A2 Final: “Ten years on, I have won again with my team, with my city”.

Roma is back in the A1 under Chairman Mezzaroma and coach Giani. The only common point with the team of 2000 is Paolucci.

However, this Roma team is the one that had decided to go down into the A2 after two A1 semi-final losses against Treviso in 2007 and Trento in 2008, and after a Cev Cup triumph that same year.

The club invested on youngsters, it built around them to find its way up, game after game. “This triumph was built in 9 months – said coach Giani – we never ceased to improve and we deserve the Serie A1. We knew Crema would have made it very tough for us, that we needed to do the job ourselves. We did it and did a great job. I like this team, I think it is a bit like me. We should not forget we have very young players on the bench and I am happy and proud of that”.

It’s been an intense season for Roma: it won the Italian Cup A2 in January and finished third of the regular season behind Castellana Grotte and Bologna, both knocked out at the semi-final stage of the playoffs. It tallied 21 wins and 7 losses. In the playoffs, it was forced to play the deciding game 3 just once, in the quarter-finals against Santa Croce.

It all ended in front of 1500 fans in Crema as the hosts fought all the way through to the fifth set in which, however, Poey and co had the better 15-12.

Chairman Mezzaroma will meet the press tomorrow.
