GM Capital Challenge Cup

Macerata wins it in Izmir

Second European Cup triumph of the weekend for the Italians. Yesterday, Treviso won the Cev Cup, and Macerata followed suit today with the Challenge Cup.

ARKAS IZMIR – LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA 2-3 (22-25, 25-20, 33-31, 19-25, 13-15) – ARKAS IZMIR: Tocoglu 1, Tendar, Subasi 8, Sahin (L), Pereira Bravo 21, Agamez Urango 26, Meszaros 9, Koc H. 3, Kandemir, Hascan 4, Gok 10. DNP Koc M. Coach. Hoag.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Conte 14, De Moraes Lampariello, Marchiani, Martino, Omrcen 12, Paparoni (L), Podrascanin 19, Savani 15, Stankovic 10, Van Walle 11, Vermiglio 5. DNP Vadeleux. Coach. Berruto.

Macerata had won home the first leg 3-0 and it is in Turkey that it celebrates its first ever Challenge Cup triumph as it beat Izmir at the tie-break. Berruto’s boys had to fight for over two hours to overcome the challenge of a very strong Turkish team and in an extremely heated up atmosphere. This Challenge Cup will stand pride next to the three Cev Cups and the Champions League. The last triumph was in 2006 when Macerata won the Cev Cup in Padova at the expense of Odintsovo from Russia.

Mauro Berruto: “It’s important that the group pulled together when we were going through our worst patch, when Omrcen got injured. Everybody responded well. I am proud to coach a team that has won all the trophies in Europe”.

Gert Van Walle: “A very important win, in a hostile atmosphere and without a champion like Omrcen for almost three sets, I think we really deserved it, we showed great character, and lifting this trophy is a really special feeling”.

Facundo Conte: “We are extremely happy, it’s been really difficult to win for many reasons starting with the atmosphere, which at times was not correct. We did well to stay focused leaving aside all the things that were happening around us”.

Valerio Vermiglio: “The least we can say is that this is an exceptional victory given the way we got it. This is a nice reward for all the sacrifices we’ve done. Omrcen’s injury was a big loss, but on the other hand, that was another reason to fight, and give him as well that joy”.

Cristian Savani: “It was really hell playing here, I had played many times in Turkey with the National team but what happened today, I had never seen it before. We haven’t played well, that hostile atmosphere had to do with it, but we snatched a well-deserved victory anyway”.

Marko Podrascanin: “We won thanks to a great team spirit, it’s the triumph of a whole group. I think winning here against this team and this crowd, especially without Omrcen, would have been impossible for almost anyone”.

Alessandro Paparoni: “An unbelievable breakthrough, we have achieved something really difficult and prestigious as well”.

Igor Omrcen: “It was really hard to watch on from the sideline, especially the tie-break. Van Walle did extremely well when he came on for me. Shame I got injured but I am equally happy”.

BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte wins again, Relegated Forlì had Verona sweating

BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE – TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-23)

BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE: Milushev 17, Rak 10, Cozzi 3, Patriarca 1, Falaschi 3, Dvoranen 7, Rodriguez 9, Gallotta 2, Cicola (L). DNP Pagano, Guglielmi, Guerra, Torre. Coach. Gulinelli.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Rivera Caamano 3, Coscione 4, Suljagic, Anderson 7, Kindgard, Baroti, Simeonov 19, Ananiev 1, Barone 6, Fanuli (L), Nikolov 5. DNP Ferraro, Feroleto. Coach. Di Pinto.

Castellana Grotte is back to victory. It clearly dominated a Vibo VAlentia, which did not get as much as it could from its spikers, while Gulinelli’s team was as effective as usual in dig and block.

Marco Falaschi (BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte): “We have added up another triumph. It’s been a tough game at the end of a nervy week in which we had to deal with Rodriguez’ problem as he was doubtful until the last minute. Credit to all the players, they played well in front of a great opponent and a fantastic crowd”.

Vincenzo Simeonov (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “I am very disappointed because we haven’t played at all. This game was meant to be a significant one for the future of our campaign. I have to congratulate our opponent, which fought for their lives and gathered a deserved victory”.

COPRA MORPHO PIACENZA – ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO 0-3 (23-25, 14-25, 23-25)

COPRA MORPHO PIACENZA: Popp 1, Marra (L), Gonzalez 8, Ruiz 8, Perazzolo 1, Nilsson 2, Massari, Zlatanov 13, Holt 11, Tencati 2. DNP Semenzato, Boschi. Coach. Lorenzetti.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 16, Birarelli 8, Della Lunga, Juantorena 13, Vieira De Oliveira 1, Sala 5, Sokolov, Colaci (L), Stokr 14, Bari (L). DNP Leonardi, Zygadlo, Garcia Pires Ribeiro. Coach. Stoytchev.

Despite the fact that it was tenth against first, this proved to be a top level game. Trento did win it 3-0 but the victory did not come easy. Indeed, Piacenza led the way for most of the first and third set.

Luca Tencati (Copra Morpho Piacenza): “We got off to a good start in the first set, we were ahead right until the very end, then Trento caught us, we needed a little luck to win it. We were playing one set at a time, but Trento is an unbelievable team, the reception becomes extremely difficult, well everything to be honest is tough, it’s hard to get passed their blocks. Piacenza did fine and was in the game until the end”.

Andrea Bari (Itas Diatec Trentino): “Piacenza hit the serve hard, we are often in difficulty because of that. The positive thing is that we managed to win two sets in which we initially fell behind. The game was not extremely brilliant, but the important thing is to take the three points”.

ANDREOLI LATINA – ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA 1-3 (26-24, 22-25, 22-25, 23-25)

ANDREOLI LATINA: Kovacevic 13, Kohut 8, Gitto, Sottile 1, Cortina (L), Spairani 9, Vujevic 16, Starovic 23, Giombini. DNP Popelka, Nonne, Pieri, Labardi. Coach. Medei.

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA: Rauwerdink 1, Pesenti, Krumins, Molteni 10, Buti 13, Rooney 21, Travica 2, Gavotto 24, Shumov 8, Exiga (L). DNP Cetrullo, Zito, Alborghetti. Coach. Monti.

Monza came back from Latina with a 3-1 win and 3 crucial points ahead of the post season. This was a battle of over 2 hours and things could have really gone either way as all four sets were tight.

Dragan Travica (Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “The level of play was not exceptional from either team. We managed to limit our mistakes after the first set. We clinched it on one point in the end”.

Danilo Cortina (Andreoli Latina): “We have had many ups and down, and in many areas of the game. We know we can do better”.

MARMI LANZA VERONA – YOGA FORLì 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 12-25, 15-13)

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Latelli, Pajenk 7, Kosmina, Brunner 8, Meoni 1, Lasko 20, Smerilli (L), Lotman 10, Cala Gerardo 21, Herpe 1. DNP Zingel, Mazzi. Coach. Bagnoli.

YOGA FORLì: Falasca 11, Ricci Petitoni (L), De Pandis (L), Ainsworth 4, Sintini 1, Kovacevic 11, Bellei 17, Caldeira 21, Oivanen 8, Bovolenta 2. DNP Bacci, Olivucci. Coach. Molducci.

Verona snatched the win at the tie-break against a solid Forlì team, which worked hard and showed some good volleyball despite being already relegated.

Piero Molducci (coach Yoga Forlì): “We have found our rhythm, the team has been gathering points everywhere for the last month and a half. Before that, we couldn’t’ put a competitive team on court because of the injuries. If we had had this team from the beginning we would have stayed up. Great contribution again tonight from the players coming off the bench. That proves that we train well and that whoever comes on is eager to do well”.

Yosleyder Cala (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We played good volleyball, shame we let it go to the fifth set. It’s an important win as well ahead of the playoffs. We keep thinking one game at a time, we know how important that is”.
