Round 19. Ravennza-Cuneo suspended. Trento sweeps Modena. Four straight for Piacenza. Derby goes to Belluno. Vibo wins in Macerata. Good result for Monza.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO – CASA MODENA 3-0 (34-32, 25-21, 25-15)

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 12, Della Lunga, Juantorena 17, Zygadlo, Vieira De Oliveira 3, Brinkman 5, Lanza 1, Sokolov 1, Colaci (L), Stokr 18, Bari (L), Burgsthaler 8. DNP Djuric. Coach. Stoytchev.

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Sala 10, Dennis 11, Carletti, Kooy 11, Bellei, Esko 1, Martino 2, Anderson 12, Piscopo 8. DNP Catellani, Bossi, Casoli. Coach. Bagnoli.

In its 450th official game in history, Trentino won the 40th encounter against Modena and the 300th win of all time.

Andrea Bari (Itas Diatec Trentino): “In the first set, we created a mess letting a five-point advantage slip away but then recovering and taking the set. We had opportunities to get away but then we have been a bit naïve. It can happen in those games, now we have one week to get ready for the Italian Cup Final Four”.

Andrea Sala (Casa Modena): “This was a good performance for a set and a half, but even then Trento played better. Then, we had more difficulty than usual which can happen against such a team. Trento hit the serve hard and it’s normal to find it hard. Now we have an important commitment ahead. We have to work harder and hope to have a chance against Macerata”.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA – ANDREOLI LATINA 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-20, 25-16)

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Papi 10, Zhekov 1, Nikolov 28, Kampa 1, Zlatanov 21, Holt 9, Tencati 3. DNP Kral, Sidibé, Massari, De Oliveira, Marretta. Coach. Monti.

ANDREOLI LATINA: Rivera Caamano 11, Gitto 2, Sottile, Jarosz 15, De Pandis (L), Troy 5, Galabinov 2, Diachkov, Cester 10, Fragkos 7. DNP Guemart, Tailli. Coach. Prandi.

MVP Vladimir Nikolov led Piacenza to a fourth consecutive win at the expense of Latina.

Vladimir Nikolov (Copra Elior Piacenza): “This is a great win: we’re feeling much better now thanks to these three points. Victories are the reward from the hard work, and when the result don’t come, there is a lack of composure. In this game, except for the second set, we have taken control of things”.

Grande Candido (Sport Director Andreoli Latina): “Our serve did not work out and that’s what mainly penalised us. Piacenza is a great team which did not deserve to stand where they were not that long ago. They have great stars and they show all their quality on court. They deserved to win”.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA 2-3 (25-21, 24-26, 17-25, 25-13, 16-18)

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Lampariello, Pajenk 13, Savani 28, Exiga (L), Parodi 5, Stankovic 5, Kovar 12, Monopoli, Van Walle 2, Travica 3, Omrcen 16, Podrascanin 2. Coach. Giuliani.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Falasca 1, Coscione, Mignolo (L), Cernic 9, Diaz 16, Grassano 2, Rak 10, Klapwijk 23, Fanuli (L), Nikolov 6. DNP Serafini, Banderò, Barone. Coach. Blengini.

Vibo Valentia made the breakthrough of this weekend by snatching the tie-break in Macerata, which put the end-word on a crisis that had seen the club lose four straight. Macerata lost Stankovic before the fifth set and was substituted by Podrascanin. A Diaz serve eventually gave Vibo an 18-16 win, which ruined a comeback from the host from 7-11 to 12 all.

Alberto Giuliani (coach Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We had an excellent start to the game, then we had the ball in hand in the second set and wasted all our opportunities. We let Vibo back in the game. This can only bring disappointment, it is difficult to take in. At times, we have also been unfortunate but what worries me the most is that we have little time to train. We’ll have to use the next couple of days to sort out a few technical things and hopefully we’ll have Stankovic back for the Italian Cup next weekend”.

Manuel Coscione (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “We played more loose, maybe thanks to the fact we eventually trained with everyone in the past few days. I don’t think this was a great game, but the important thing for us was to get off the mark, so much so that we were literally galvanised when we won our first set, it had not happened for quite a while. Two crucial points”.

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA – MARMI LANZA VERONA 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-16)

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA: Ciabattini, Rossini (L), Nikic 6, Forni 9, Buti 6, Rooney 11, Kaszap, De Cecco 2, Gavotto 12. DNP Conte, Molteni, Roumeliotis. Coach. Zanini.

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Popp 4, Kosmina, Ter Horst 2, Calderan, Meoni, Smerilli (L), Patriarca 8, Casarin, Kromm 9, Postiglioni 5, Gasparini 8. Coach. Bagnoli.

Monza bounced back after its defeat against Latina. It hosted and defeated Verona 3-0 and stands now one point from Modena, beaten in Trento. MVP: Rooney.

Salvatore Rossini (Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “We did a good job of limiting their main strengths, by being aggressive in dig and at the net. We had prepared the game very carefully and I think you could see that. We also managed to defend some tough serves like the ones of Kromm and Gasparini”.

Mitja Gasparini (Marmi Lanza Verona): “I think Monza played a good game, they played up to their standard and they converted certain plays that were not easy. As for us, we had good moments, being at their level, but at other times we made too many mistakes, we let them fly away and couldn’t get back in it”.

FIDIA PADOVA – SISLEY BELLUNO 0-3 (22-25, 23-25, 21-25)

FIDIA PADOVA: Schwarz 12, Gonzalez 6, Tiberti, Koshikawa 1, Giannotti, Rosso 10, De Marchi 12, Semenzato 3, Suljagic 5, Zingaro (L). DNP Garghella, Cricca. Coach. Montagnani.

SISLEY BELLUNO: Abdelaziz, Fei 14, Horstink 15, Dolfo, Farina (L), Kohut 8, De Togni 5, Suxho, Antonov, Ogurcak 10. DNP Szabò, Curti, Sorato. Coach. Piazza.

The Venetian derby played in front of a big crowd went to Belluno in Padova, which was without starting outside hitter Simeonov, injured.

Paolo Montagnani (coach Fidia Padova): “With Simeonov, we would have needed a great performance but without him we just needed an amazing game. Unfortunately, this did not happen and Belluno did not give anything away either. You can understand why they stand so high in the league table. We’ll use the break to understand what is exactly the conditions of Simeonov’s back”.

Roberto Piazza (coach Sisley Belluno): “We handled things very well, while Padova paid the price for being without its starting outside hitter. But I am happy with the work the boys are doing. I always expect more and more from them, though, game after game”.

Game interrupted due to the state of the court (condensation due to the freezing cold of the outside and the higher temperature inside)
