MARMI LANZA VERONA – CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA 2-3 (25-23, 26-24, 24-26, 16-25, 9-15)

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Rak 8, Kosmina, Ter Horst 15, Gotsev 7, Bolla, Pesaresi (L), Gavotto 23, Peacock 3, Viafara 1, Fedrizzi 3, De Marchi 11. DNP Meoni, Centomo. Coach. Bagnoli.

CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Lampariello 3, Pajenk 3, Zaytsev 28, Parodi 9, Stankovic 9, Monopoli, Henno (L), Travica 4, Kooy 5, Podrascanin 16. DNP Diamantini, Randazzo, Starovic. Coach. Giuliani.

Some might have expected a quick one but instead it lasted over two hours. In a packed arena (4824 supporters), Verona took a 2-0 over the Italian champions but Macerata recovered to push it to the tie-break. Nice new entry for the hosts with the Colombian Viafara but MVP Zaytsev led the come-back for Macerata with 28 points and 65% in attack, but more importantly he did the job in the third set when his team was trailing 24-22. Character of a champion.

Alberto Giuliani (coach Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “The four games played in just a few days and the fact we remained without Starovic this morning did have an influence on today’s game. That’s why I can only be satisfied with the contribution of all the players that came on court and with the victory. Monopoli and Lampariello have been great architects of this triumph”.

Nicola Pesaresi (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We went close to the breakthrough with a match point, we had a great game and the fans have been just exceptional. Shame for that missing point but we really can’t criticize anything, we’re happy with the result, this was Verona’s best performance of the season”.

BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE – ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO 0-3 (22-25, 18-25, 25-27)

BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE: Menzel 1, Elia, Paparoni (L), Falaschi 4, Dolfo, Ferreira, Sabbi 10, Ferreira 8, Yosifov 7, Cester 4, Casoli 11, Krumins. DNP Ricciardello. Coach. Gulinelli.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 1, Birarelli 5, Juantorena 20, Vieira De Oliveira, Lanza 8, Djuric 7, Colaci (L), Stokr 14, Bari (L), Burgsthaler 1. DNP Sintini, Uchikov, Chrtiansky Jr. Coach. Stoytchev.

Castellana Grotte was swept by Juantorena (Mvp) and the rest of the World Champions but they certainly offered a performance full of pride. Gulinelli’s team would have deserved at least a set but Trento is a team that do not leave any mistake unpunished.

Giulio Sabbi (BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte): “We tried our best, we fought on every point but there was nothing we could do. We are a bit disappointed, we would have deserved a little something more, but I think this game can give us confidence in our ability. That should encourage us to do better from the next game at home against Latina”.

Osmany Juantorena (Itas Diatec Trentino): “Fortunately, our serve went a bit better today, not so much the attack but what matters is the result and we’re glad we won this difficult encounter. We’re a bit tired but we knew from the start we would have had to play on many fronts. Let’s go ahead and take one step at a time”.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA – SIR SAFETY PERUGIA 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21)

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Papi 5, Fei 12, Ogurcak 4, Simon 17, Holt 13, Tencati, Maruotti 9, Vettori 11, De Cecco 3. DNP Latelli, Tavana, Corvetta. Coach. Monti.

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA: Alletti 3, Van Harskamp, Petric 12, Daldello 1, Giovi (L), Tomassetti, Schwarz, Tamburo 11, Vujevic 15, Edgar 5, Pochini (L), Semenzato 8. Coach. Kovac.

A game full of unexpected. There was very little excitement in the first two sets but that quickly shifted to an unbelievable encounter after that, full of impossible saves, recoveries, come-backs and expulsions too (Giovi in the fourth set). Piacenza basically played three lackluster sets before finding its fighting spirit. In the end, they managed to make it four consecutive wins in nearly two hours of play.

MVP: Luca Vettori

Luca Vettori (Copra Elior Piacenza): “We haven’t played our best game but the important thing is the victory. We have a strong team, composed of excellent players, but we’re still not exactly performing at our best. We’re still on and off, but we’re on the right track towards perfection as a team”.

Aimone Alletti (Sir Safety Perugia): “Playing in Piacenza has been a thrilling experience. Shame we did not get the result we wanted. We were way ahead in the third, then they came back and, for that ball not touched at the end of the third set, the set went the other way. I have Piacenza in my heart but unfortunately work took me far away from my home town”.

CASA MODENA – BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-19)

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Deroo 11, Quesque 7, Celitans 14, Casadei 1, Vesely 5, Molteni 3, Baranowicz 3, Piscopo 3. DNP Catellani, Sala, Pinelli. Coach. Lorenzetti.

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Mastrangelo 5, Antonov 4, Marchisio (L), Ngapeth 7, De Pandis (L), Wijsmans 8, Kohut 3, Grbic 2, Della Lunga, Sokolov 13, Abdelaziz 1. DNP Galliani, Rossi. Coach. Piazza.

Modena achieved what it had failed to do since 2007: beat Cuneo. This also puts an end to a three-game losing streak. Smiles are back on the faces as the hosts played with great intensity and competitive spirit. Probably Modena’s best game of the season. MVP: Michele Baranowicz, former Cuneo player.

Angelo Lorenzetti (coach Casa Modena): “Excellent attitude from the team, we still have big weaknesses, but this is a very important win. Like I said before the game, we have to start over trying to improve bit by bit with the enthusiasm we had a few weeks ago. This was not the usual Cuneo today, but we did well to take advantage. Baranowicz? He has talent and personality.

Roberto Piazza (coach Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “You tell me this is not the true Cuneo? So my question is: what is the true Cuneo? I am in charge of this team and I’m asking myself if what I am dictating to the team is right. I understood from the very beginning of the game that there was something wrong in the team”.

ANDREOLI LATINA – TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22)

ANDREOLI LATINA: Rauwerdink 14, Rossini (L), Gitto 7, Sottile 2, Jarosz 17, Verhees 5, Noda Blanco 9, Cisolla, Fragkos, Guemart. DNP Patriarca, Prandi, Troy. Coach. Prandi.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Coscione, Cortellazzi, Kaliberda 13, Farina (L), Forni, Badawy 1, Buti 8, Klapwijk 11, Barone 6, Urnaut 10. DNP Montesanti, Rocamora. Coach. Blengini.

Latina beats Vibo and stays in the top part of the league table. They take all three points and leapfrog their opponent of the day, and even take advantage of Cuneo’s defeat in Modena to move up to third. This was an open game played at a good level, but the hosts had a better attack with 63% compared to Vibo’s 53%. There was no stopping Rauwerdink (81%): MVP of the game.

Jeroen Rauwerdink (Andreoli Latina): “We could not have hoped for more. We all played at a high level and like a top quality team. It’s an important win against a team that was ahead of us in the table. We showed great consistency today”.

Manuel Coscione (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “We played fairly well today but we met team that played better than us. They did not give anything away and they put us under great pressure in every area of the game, starting with the serve. We knew their way of playing but we lost our patience a bit”.
