Round 1: CMC Romagna snatch a point vs Civitanova. Ninfa Latina, Calzedonia Verona and LPR Piacenza win 3-0. Games in Modena and Monza on Tuesday and Wednesday

SuperLega UnipolSai round 1 results

Tonazzo Padova-Ninfa Latina 0-3 (14-25, 18-25, 22-25); DHL Modena-Exprivia Molfetta 27/10/2015 at 8.30pm; Sir Safety Conad Perugia-Calzedonia Verona 0-3 (17-25, 21-25, 23-25); Gi Group Monza-Diatec Trentino 28/10/2015 at 8.30pm; CMC Romagna-Cucine Lube Banca Marche Civitanova 2-3 (26-24, 25-23, 18-25, 20-25, 9-15); LPR Piacenza-Revivre Milano 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16)

TONAZZO PADOVA – NINFA LATINA 0-3 (14-25, 18-25, 22-25)

TONAZZO PADOVA: Cook 8, Leoni, Orduna 1, Giannotti 12, Balaso (L), Quiroga 10, Volpato 3, Averill 6, Berger, Milan 2, Diamantini. DNP Bassanello, Lazzaretto. Coach. Baldovin.

NINFA LATINA: Krumins 2, Sket 11, Pavlov 11, Romiti (L), Boninfante, Tailli, Hirsch 1, Yosifov 7, Rossi 5, Maruotti 14. DNP Mattei, Ferenciac. Coach. Placì.

Thanks to an accurate attack, Latina came back from Padova with a straight set victory, while the hosts struggled to develop their team play in the clutch moments of the encounter.

Valerio Baldovin (coach Tonazzo Padova): “We made too many mistakes, especially on the first attack after the reception, and we can’t afford to do that. Overall we’re not accurate enough yet in the way we handle certain plays in dig. Latina put us under a lot of pressure, and they did not make many mistakes. We’re still a work in progress, we just have to get right back down to work in the gym”.

Camillo Placì (coach Ninfa Latina): “The team was well-organised and made very few mistakes. This is exactly what I had asked the boys before the game. I am glad because I got here just a few days ago, just like a few others of our players. In the end, the team that made the fewest mistakes won it”.

SIR SAFETY CONAD PERUGIA – CALZEDONIA VERONA 0-3 (17-25, 21-25, 23-25)

SIR SAFETY CONAD PERUGIA: Buti 5, Fromm 2, De Cecco 1, Kaliberda 8, Giovi (L), Russell 9, Dimitrov, Tzioumakas, Elia 2, Atanasijevic 15, Fanuli, Birarelli. DNP Holt. Coach. Castellani.

CALZEDONIA VERONA: Zingel 5, Kovacevic 10, Pesaresi (L), Lecat, Spirito, Baranowicz 4, Starovic 11, Bellei, Sander 12, Anzani 5. DNP Gitto, Frigo, Bucko. Coach. Giani.

Perugia stumbled in the opening round, defeated in straight sets home by an excellent Verona team who deservedly took all three points. The push from three thousand supporters that filled the gym were not enough for the Block Devils who made too many mistakes in attack, struggled in reception and did not do much at the net. The fact they were without Birarelli and with De Cecco injured in the third set cannot fully explain this loss. But credit to Giani’s men who looked more of a team and with three spikers – MVP Kovacevic, Santer and Starovic – all torturing the Perugia dig.

Aleksandar Atanasijevic (Sir Safety Conad Perugia): “We had a poor game, we made silly mistakes. Very bad start, I feel sorry for all our fans, because they packed the arena and they encouraged us from start to finish. We really have a lot of work to do, fortunately this is only the beginning”.

Simone Anzani (Calzedonia Verona): “The opening game is never easy, you need to break the ice and try to put it all together. We did not have much time, and neither did they because of international commitment and with all the new players to insert in the roster. We did a better job of limiting their blockers and servers, we forced them to make many mistakes in attack and dig”.

CMC ROMAGNA – CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE CIVITANOVA 2-3 (26-24, 25-23, 18-25, 20-25, 9-15) – CMC ROMAGNA: Mengozzi 4, Ricci 7, Cavanna 2, Della Lunga, Van Garderen 23, Polo 1, Koumentakis 19, Goi (L), Torres 21, Boswinkel 1, Bari (L), Perini De Aviz. DNP Zappoli. Coach. Kantor.

CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE CIVITANOVA: Fei 7, Gabriele 8, Parodi 3, Juantorena 33, Vitelli, Stankovic 10, Sabbi 3, Cester, Grebennikov (L), Corvetta 1, Podrascanin 12. DNP Christenson, Cebulj. Coach. Blengini.

Before the game, middle blocker Alberto Polo received the Best Under 23 award for his 2014-15 season. While Civitanova was without Cebulj and Christenson because of physical problems, Ravenna started off strong and took a 2-0 lead thanks to excellent performances from Koumentakis, Van Garderen and Ricci. Parodi had to leave the action during the game and was substituted by Gabriele but the guests found their rhythm and Romagna lost their composure. Led by Juantorena (an incredible 33 points), Blengini’s men forced a tie-break which they dominated 15-9.

MVP: Osmany Juantorena (Cucine Lube BdM Civitanova).

Osmany Juantorena (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Civitanova): “We found it hard to start with, but we knew it, we were missing players and with so little time spent together in training it was not easy. They played well and they really made it hard for us, while we started off a bit tense. But we got better as the game wore on. I am delighted because from 2-0 down we saw the team react as a unit, we got back in it and won it”.

Maarten Van Garderen (CMC Romagna): “We had an excellent start, they were without a few players but we deservedly took a 2-0 lead. Then they got better and they served better than us. And Juantorena has been just extraordinary, he served brilliantly, received a lot and scored a top quality points. Once he got in the game he made the difference. In the fifth set, we were not there mentally anymore, when you get from 2-0 up to 2-2, it’s always difficult to face the tie-break. But it’s still a good point against Civitanova for us, a good way to start the season”.

LPR PIACENZA – REVIVRE MILANO 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16)

LPR PIACENZA: Manià (L), Coscione 2, Kohut 5, Perrin 17, Papi, Sedlacek, Patriarca 3, Zlatanov 15, Luburic 13, Tencati 3. DNP Ter Horst, Rodrigues Tavares, Cottarelli. Coach. Giuliani.

REVIVRE MILANO: Gavenda 2, Borovnjak, Alletti 7, Sottile 2, Sbertoli, Russomanno Dos Santos 7, Tosi (L), De Togni 2, Galaverna 12, Burgsthaler 2, Marretta 8. DNP Milushev, Skrimov, Rivan. Coach. Monti.

A perfect start for Piacenza who swept the Milan team led by former Piacenza coach Luca Monti.

MVP: Perrin

Manuel Coscione (LPR Piacenza): “The result tells us it went well, but the flow of the attack is getting better but it’s not that fluid yet. We did well on the break and served fine too though. I’d say that was a good performance, we needed to take points and that’s what we did. Now we’ll face a big test in Civitanova”.

Luca Monti (coach Revivre Milano): “It was nice to go back to Piacenza, I am glad the club is still in the SuperLega, not as happy with the result though. We did not play loose at all, we were blocked by the fear of the debut game and it’s difficult to play in such condition. The defeat is just what we deserved today”.
