Entertainment and surprises in round 2. Sold out in Ravenna on the return in the Pala De Andrè arena. Vibo frightens Cuneo, Wijsmans injured.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA – ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO 2-3 (21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 10-15)

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Ammerman 1, Marra (L), Kral 4, Sidibé 1, Papi 13, Zhekov 2, Nikolov 22, Massari 1, Zlatanov 22, Holt 7, Tencati 2, Penchev 1. DNP Marretta. Coach. Lorenzetti.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 19, Birarelli 3, Della Lunga 9, Juantorena, Zygadlo, Vieira De Oliveira 1, Lanza, Sokolov, Djuric 9, Colaci (L), Stokr 27, Bari (L), Burgsthaler 2. Coach. Stoytchev.

First honors to Tencati, blocker of the year in 2011, Holt, best middle blocker and to the most correct crowd of the country. Then, a real battle in which Trento could only come out winner at the tie-break against Piacenza. The fifth set was tight until Kaziyski put his foot on the pedal to take an 11-8 lead. The same Kaziyski made sure there would be no comeback (15-10). MVP: Stokr.

Andrea Bari (Itas Diatec Trentino): “Apart from the first set, Piacenza maintained a good level of play. They have great players this season and an even better coach. We knew it was going to be a tricky one, even more so given that we’re going to the World Club Championship in four days, this game was a test for us for our future games. It’s always a big game against Piacenza, a remake of a league final. As for our game, we could have done better. I am certain that Piacenza will improve during the year and will have an excellent season, towards the top of the table”.

Jiri Kral (Copra Elior Piacenza): “The best thing of this game is that we never gave up after a first set in which Trento dominated. We believed in our chances right until the end and we fought hard. Unfortunately, we gave away the second set, in the successive ones, we got back in it and believed in our ability. What made the difference is Trento’s huge experience and the confidence that each player conveys in his teammates. But we’ll also become more and more united in the next few games, it’s only a question of time and training”.

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA – FIDIA PADOVA 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23)

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA: Aleksiev 11, Rossini (L), Nikic 18, Forni 5, Molteni, Buti 9, Rooney, De Cecco 6, Gavotto 13, Shumov 3, Roumeliotis. DNP Ciabattini, Zhukouski, Mor. Coach. Zanini.

FIDIA PADOVA: Garghella (L), Schwarz 7, Gonzalez 6, Tiberti 1, Cricca 6, Koshikawa, Rosso 12, De Marchi 8, Simeonov 19, Semenzato 3, Suljagic 4. DNP Giannotti, Zingaro. Coach. Montagnani.

Monza defeated Padova on its home debut.

Emanuele Zanini (coach Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “We managed to get three important points, useful to make steps forward in the table. It has not been easy against Padova, they are a great team. In the fourth set, we were 16-7 up but we let them back in it. This should not worry us too much, because it has always happened in volleyball and it will keep happening. But it’s a useful lesson to learn and get better”.

Paolo Montagnani (coach Fidia Padova): “This was a good opportunity to add points to our tally. In the fourth set we had the momentum of our comeback and it’s a real shame not to have taken advantage to get back in the game. My boys played with discipline, but this team still has to learn how you play in the A1, with organization and all the weapons you have at your disposal”.

MARMI LANZA VERONA – SISLEY BELLUNO 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 18-25, 19-17)

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Popp 18, Ter Horst 2, Calderan, Meoni, Smerilli (L), Patriarca 11, Zingel 9, Casarin, Kromm 27, Postiglioni, Gasparini 16. DNP Kosmina. Coach. Bagnoli.

SISLEY BELLUNO: Abdelaziz, Fei 34, Horstink 21, Kohut 10, De Togni 10, Suxho, Antonov, Sorato (L), Ogurcak 12. DNP Szabò, Dolfo, Curti, Cester. Coach. Piazza.

The derby from the Venetian area lasted over two hours and in the end Verona snatched it at the tie-break. Kromm shined and shared the MVP title with Calderan, who substituted Meoni, injured at a finger, in the second set. Still Belluno had managed to tie it after being two sets down.

Roberto Piazza (coach Sisley Belluno): “Making comments on a game you lose 3-2 and 19-17 is always complicated, especially when you lose the first two sets 25-23, which means on one action in very hard fought affairs. We still have too many lapses on simple situations but it definitely went better than in our opening game”.

Robert Kromm (Marmi Lanza Verona): “I am really happy to be back in the PalaOlimpia. We played as a team and the fans really helped us get the result. In the fifth set, we did well to stay composed and focused to win it. We have taken points and entertained our fans, we’re satisfied”.

CMC RAVENNA – CASA MODENA 0-3 (29-31, 16-25, 20-25)

CMC RAVENNA: Mengozzi 5, Leonardi, Corvetta 2, Sirri 13, Tabanelli (L), Quiroga 1, Gallosti, Moro 12, Brunner 7, Gruszka 4. DNP Bendandi, Ricci. Coach. Babini.

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Sala 8, Diachkov 2, Dennis 18, Carletti, Kooy 11, Esko 2, Anderson 17, Piscopo 9. DNP Catellani, Bellei. Coach. Bagnoli.

Modena won 3-0 as Ravenna will be disappointed not to have converted any of the seven set points at its disposal in the first set.

Luca Sirri (CMC Ravenna): “We did a good job of containing their spikers in the first set but we have not been clinical, we did not seal it and Modena escaped. Still, we cannot consider this game nor the one against Macerata negative performances”.

Daniele Bagnoli (coach Casa Modena): “I am very happy with the win. We played poorly in the first set, fortunately we got back in it in the end but it will not always work out this way, we have to learn to start better. Then Piscopo had a problem and could not attack anymore but he was really good at the net. I think in the end our quality prevailed”.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA – BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO 2-3 (26-24, 25-27, 25-19, 23-25, 11-15)

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Falasca, Coscione 2, Mignolo (L), Cernic 13, Diaz 15, Bratoev, Rak 7, Bonetti, Klapwijk 27, Barone 3, Fanuli (L), Nikolov 14. DNP Grassano. Coach. Blengini.

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Mastrangelo 12, Henno (L), Ngapeth 22, Fortunato 1, Wijsmans 6, Vissotto Neves 14, Grbic 4, Caceres 5, Patriarca 4, Rossi 5, Baranowicz. DNP Van Lankvelt, Pieri. Coach. Gulinelli.

Second round and second tie-break for Vibo, who played some excellent volleyball but could not have the better of Cuneo.

Gianlorenzo Blengini (coach Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “At times, we really played well, but they never gave up. Then we had a moment of hesitation and a couple of unfortunate decisions that went their way. Thanks to some details and a little luck, they got back in it and they did a good job of taking advantage of the chances that came their way. I am personally extremely satisfied with the way the team performed, even when the opponent were better than us. This is what I asked my boys to do. Once we have acquired this attitude, it is much easier to work on our volleyball”.

Flavio Gulinelli (coach Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “I expected a battle and that’s how it went. We knew it was going to be tough, not only because of the heat, but because we faced a team that made it difficult for us in many ways. In the end, we managed to come out on top and I hope we will not pay the price of this victory by losing players on injuries, given that Wijsmans had to come out and we don’t know yet how serious that is. Still, we did a good job, we tried to vary our game, we stayed in it with patience and in the end, without taking anything away from our opponent, I think we deserved the result”.

M. ROMA VOLLEY – LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA 0-3 (19-25, 18-25, 16-25)

M. ROMA VOLLEY: Lebl 4, Paolucci, Maruotti 2, Zaytsev 7, Boninfante, Bencz 3, Corsano (L), Sabbi 11, Bjelica 3. DNP Ottaviani, Antonucci, Sorgente, Cisolla. Coach. Giani.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Lampariello, Pajenk 7, Savani 14, Exiga (L), Parodi 9, Travica 2, Omrcen 18, Podrascanin 6. DNP Stankovic, Monopoli, Van Walle, Randazzo. Coach. Giuliani.

The excitement could be felt in the air in the Italian capital for the first home game of the season. In order to get a positive result, Roma would have needed Macerata to have an under par performance, though, and a brilliant one of their own, but that went differently.

Dante Boninfante (M. Roma Volley): “There was no need to be told how strong was Macerata but tonight we had a confirmation. We hoped to be able to repeat the level of the first set played in Modena, but we did not manage to do that. We made too many mistakes, especially on the serve and on high balls, and against a team that serves so well, you can’t afford it”.

Cristian Savani (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We are in good shape and we took advantage of the better understanding we have with our setter compared to Roma because we have been together in the national team this summer. We feel we have a strong team this season, let’s cross our fingers, hopefully we’ll be able to challenge Trento for the league title”.
