World Club Championships 2012

Trento’s comfortable 3-0 win over the Mexicans of Tigres Uanl added to the 3-1 loss of al Rayan against Cruzeiro means the Italians are already through to the semi-finals, to be played on October 18. There will therefore be no pressure on Tuesday in the big game against the Brazilians. Still, the game will decide who finishes top and the consequent opponent in the semis.

CMC RAVENNA: Mengozzi 3, Zhukouski 1, Psarras, Tabanelli (L), Mazzotti, Radunovic 2, Zanuto 5, Moro 2, Bellei 12, Creus Larry 2. DNP Sirri, Pelekoudas. Coach. Babini.

Winning home debut for Cuneo over Ravenna in just over an hour of play. Della Lunga was in the stand rested because of an abdominal problem, while young Nimir Abdelaziz (1992) had his first game with his new shirt. The coach of the Bulgarian national team, Camillo Placì, watched the game as Tsvetan Sokolov was named MVP.

Tsvetan Sokolov (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We played well, we did what we had prepared in training, which is why we won. We have a good team. We just have to keep playing at our best to get some victories”.

Giacomo Bellei (CMC Ravenna): “We have been a bit naive, and made too many mistakes. And you cannot afford to make that kind of mistakes against a team like Cuneo. But anyway these are not the games we are aiming to win”.

CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-22)

CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Lampariello, Savani 9, Zaytsev 17, Parodi 6, Stankovic 8, Monopoli, Henno (L), Travica 4, Starovic 1, Podrascanin 8. DNP Pajenk. Coach. Giuliani.

BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE: Menzel 8, Ricciardello (L), Falaschi 1, Ferreira, Sabbi 12, Ferreira, Yosifov 7, Cester 7, Casoli 6. DNP Elia, Paparoni, Kindgard. Coach. Gulinelli.

Over two thousand supporters were there to see the Italian champions dispose of the newly promoted side of Castellana Grotte. Before the game, the best Under 23 of last season, Gianfranco Badiali, received his award. Three wins in as many games for Macerata so far, including the Super Cup victory, but the first on a 3-0 score.

Alberto Giuliani (coach Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We did fine in the first two sets, although we made a few mistakes on the serve in the second. But I liked the reaction of the team that managed to recover from a tricky situation, in which Castellana had forced us”.

Flavio Gulinelli (coach BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte): “Considering what we have done on court, especially in the third set, we could have had a better result. Unfortunately, you really have to play to perfection against teams like Macerata, otherwise you end up with the outcome we had today. A new season will begin for us from next Sunday”.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA – ALTOTEVERE SAN GIUSTINO 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17) COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Latelli, Marra (L), Corvetta 1, Papi 13, Zlatanov 16, Holt 9, Tencati 11, Maruotti 2, Vettori 21. DNP Tavana, Ogurcak, De Cecco. Coach. Monti.

ALTOTEVERE SAN GIUSTINO: Fiore 12, Van Den Dries 20, Guttmann, Mc Kibbin, Cesarini (L), Bohme 12, Mattioli 5, Torre, De Togni 7, Cebulj 4. DNP Coali, Gradi, Lo Bianco. Coach. Fenoglio.

First Luca Tencati, best blocker, and Luca Vettori, best Under 23 in the A2, received their award for last season. Funnily enough, it was Vettori again who was named MVP of the encounter as Piacenza had the better of San Giustino 3-1.

Luca Monti (coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “We struggled when San Giustino changed setter. Torre set a good rhythm and changed their game. We were a bit tense in this first home game but we’ve seen we could recover from negative situations. We played intelligently and as a team. I want to congratulate Luca Vettori who had a splendid game on his debut in the A1”.

Giorgio De Togni (Altotevere San Giustino): “Our main goal was to stay as close as possible. Unfortunately, we only managed to do that in the third set and at the start of the fourth, when we took a good lead. But we disappeared from that moment on. We still have to work to find our balance. In training, we keep a high rhythm from start to finish, we have to repeat that during the games”.

MARMI LANZA VERONA – ANDREOLI LATINA 2-3 (21-25, 25-22, 26-28, 26-24, 11-15) – MARMI LANZA VERONA: Zingel, Rak 18, Kosmina, Ter Horst 18, Gotsev 7, Meoni 1, Pesaresi (L), Gavotto 17, Peacock 1, Fedrizzi, De Marchi 18. DNP Bolla, Centomo. Coach. Bagnoli.

ANDREOLI LATINA: Rauwerdink 10, Rossini (L), Gitto 7, Sottile 1, Jarosz 23, Patriarca 8, Verhees 13, Troy 1, Noda Blanco 7, Cisolla 11, Fragkos, Guemart. DNP Prandi. Coach. Prandi.

Patriarca and Sottile were back in the PalaOlimpia arena with Latina as 2350 fans watched a great show. Verona got its first point of the season and could have hoped for more if it wasn’t for a little bit of luck from MVP Verhees (13 points, 4 aces, 2 blocks and 58% in attack) at the end of the game.

Michal Rak (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We wanted more than this point, we wanted the win. This was a tough game which we managed to face positively with more energy that in the game against Modena, so we can be happy with that. I want to convey my fighting spirit and my experience to the team. Shame we lacked a bit of luck at the end of the game to get more points”.

Stefano Patriarca (Andreoli Latina): “A win in Verona could definitely not be taken for granted, we got the victory in spite of some ups and downs. But the whole team, including the ones that came off the bench, give their best effort. We’ve started well and we can only get better. Verona is a team that never gives up and even in its difficult moments, they have put us under pressure just like Bagnoli likes them to do”.
