Piacenza upset the Italian champs for the second time running in three days, this time on the road (3700 spectators). The malediction of the fifth set continues for Giuliani’s team: they have won only 2 out of 9. Now Macerata will have no choice but win in Piacenza in game 4, otherwise they’re out. In the decisive set, Piacenza took the early initiatives, going 9-4 up thanks to some excellent serving from Simon. But Macerata fought back to tie it at 10 all. From that point on, a thrilling affair lasted up to the 22-20 sealed by a Fei ace. Macerata had had 5 match points.
Alberto Giuliani (coach Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “A defeat like that, with such a tie-break, it’s really hard to take in. The game has been characterized by superb run of serves, especially from Piacenza, at times we managed to contain them, by at times we couldn’t. The last set has definitely been the best one, even if ruined by some poor referee decisions. We have already had a chat in the changing room, we’ll go to Piacenza on Wednesday determined to get back to Osimo for game 5”.
Luca Monti (coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “We dominated the second and third set, while the tie-break has been a battle that any team could have won. During the game we tried to use all the resources of the squad, and that paid off. Now we have two opportunities to reach the final, we’ll need to find a way to convert one”.
