World Club Championships 2013

Trentino out

The chase for the fifth consecutive World Club Championships title is over. Trento was knocked out at the semi-final stage in Betim by the Champions League holders, Novosibirsk. The Russians will face the winner of UPCN versus Cruzeiro in the final, while the Italians will play for third place.

Against a Novosibirsk team that proved effective in every area of the game except for the serve (62% in attack but only 2 aces), Trento fought hard right until the end and will have regret about not hanging on to the 11-5 lead of the fourth set and pushing the game to the tie-break. The positive note came from the brilliant performance from Sokolov: 23 points and 57% in attack.

“We’re a bit disappointed to go out like that but we are also proud of the way we played against such a strong team – said coach Serniotti – We played a good game until the very end and we might have deserved to play a fifth set but we failed to seal it in the fourth set. Still, this performance makes me look to the future with a positive frame of mind”.
