Trentino came out on top at the tie-break at the end of a battle that lasted over two hours against Città di Castello. Coach Serniotti was without Sokolov and Szabo but with new signing Van Dijk. In the tie-break, Trento took the early initiatives (5-8) but Città di Castello got back thanks to two consecutive points from Fromm (10-10). That’s when Lanza took over for the guests to give Trento the win.

MVP: Alexandre Ferreira

Filippo Lanza (Diatec Trentino) : “We did not adapt well to the court and we struggled to contain their serve and dig at times. Dominated in the fourth, we found our game in the tie-break and played with determination. This win could turn things around for us after a difficult period”.

Matteo Piano (Altotevere Città di Castello): “We could have done better but we’ll have to be happy with this. Our team is young but we managed to play face to face with much more experienced squads. We’re having an excellent season, but we have to work our socks off every day”.

CASA MODENA – CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA 0-3 (21-25, 19-25, 18-25) – CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Sala 8, Sket 7, Deroo 3, Kampa, Bartman 3, Beretta 2, Bossi 2, Mossa De Rezende 1, Kovacevic 7, Ngapeth 10. DNP Hendriks. Coach. Lorenzetti.

In front of over 5000 supporters, Macerata defeated Modena in its own house to stay top of the league table. An extremely solid performance for Macerata, led by the trio Zaytsev-Parodi-Baranowicz (former Modena player). Modena lacked consistency in attack (37%) and they failed to convert important opportunities in the first set.

MVP: Michele Baranowicz

Angelo Lorenzetti (Coach Casa Modena): “It’s been an extremely intense week, mentally tiring with three very important games for us. I’d say the boys did very well for one set and three quarters. The shame is that we made a lot of mistakes in the first set on the counter and against such a focused Macerata team, you can’t afford to do so”.

Alberto Giuliani (Coach Cucine Lube Banca MarcheMacerata): “We’re still working our way back up, but I think there were clear signs of healing tonight. The team had an excellent game on the serve and in attack. Now we have to work and get our players back to full fitness before the Italian cup final four”.

The hard-fought encounter in the PalaOlimpia arena went all the way to the wire with top scorer Sabbi (41) leading the guests to victory.  In the tie-break, Verona took a 7-5 lead but Molfetta fought back (9-10). Then Gasparini was blocked and Sabbi finished the job off for the guests.

MVP: Gasparini.

Mitja Gasparini (Calzedonia Verona): “We have not played as a team tonight in the clutch times, this is the problem we had. I am angry, you cannot win like that. Once again, we lacked the needed composure to seal it”.

Giulio Sabbi (Exprivia Molfetta): “The win we were looking for to move up the table finally arrived. This is  our first victory on the road, two valuable points we dedicate to our manager who recently passed away. We’re all happy and satisfied, this win will give us a boost and motivation for the coming fixtures”.

The game started with a special ovation for the three former Vibo player Barone, Buti and Fanuli. Coach Blengini had to make do without starting setter Steuerwald, Cisolla and Villena, while Crer and Ogurcak were far from physically 100% fit. Young setter from Trinidad De Haro made his full debut as Petric and Atanasijevic (MVP) did the job for the guests, who came back home with a straight set victory.

Pablo Damian Crer (Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia): “We knew it was going to be tough for us, be that for the quality of the opponent and for our long injury list. We tried our best. We can’t put our heads down and have to keep giving our best in training even if it is difficult to train with consistency like this. Now we’ll focus on the next game against Trento”.

Rocco Barone (Sir Safety Perugia): “At the start it was tough to be back and play in this splendid gym. There were a lot of emotions. The game went well for us, we could take advantage of the fact they were without their starting setter. I came on fine in the game, coach Kovac always wants us to be ready anytime. We don’t want to stop now, we want to do well in the cup semi-final and get to the playoffs in good shape”.
