The Italian champions conceded their first defeat of the season in Europe. After four consecutive win, including the Super Cup, Treia surrendered to Fenerbahce at the tie-break in Istanbul despite being so close to victory at 2-1 and 23-20 up in the fourth set. A five-nil break was followed with a 9-15 loss in the fifth set. The next game will be in Macerata against tre French of Paris.

Alberto Giuliani (coach Cucine Lube Treia): “Just 72 hours after the Ravenna game, though we met an opponent that did not miss much, we have played much differently with a lot of mistakes on the serve and lacking consistency in the other fundamentals. We managed to take a point out of a tough place like Istanbul, but you can only judge good a performance when you win and today we failed in the clutch times. Now we have to focus immediately on Sunday’s league game against Piacenza”.

Marko Podrascanin (Cucine Lube Treia): “Shame, we were so close to get three points on a tough court against Fenerbahce, and instead we have just one. We know for well that in this competition and in such a group like ours this result could cost us dear in terms of qualification, but now we have to reset our minds and make up for it”.

Dragan Stankovic (Cucine Lube Treia): “From the second set on, we got back on track, won it at the death and then took the third too. Then we had a black-out at the end of the fourth letting our opponents back in and losing the tie-break. We know it’s going to be very hard till the end because our group is very tough”.

COPRA ARDELIA PIACENZA – TOMIS CONSTANTA 2-3 (25-16, 22-25, 25-27, 25-22, 12-15)

COPRA ARDELIA PIACENZA: Le Roux 21, Vermiglio 3, Papi 10, Ter Horst 1, Da Silva Pedreira Junior (L), Massari 3, Zlatanov 17, Ostapenko 6, Tencati, Kohut 9. DNP Marra, Tavares Rodrigues. Coach. Radici.

TOMIS CONSTANTA: Petkov 17, Janic 20, Stancu 3, Zhekov 2, Tanasescu, Pavel 1, Spinu 10, Simeonov 25, Rosic (L), Laza 2. DNP Stoian, Aciobanitei. Coach. Stoev.

Piacenza’s champions League debut did not come with a happy ending either. A brilliant first set that was one-way traffic, the Italians could not cope with Costanta’s serve anymore. Simeonov (25 points) and Janic (20 points, 2 aces, 1 block) did most of the damage. Zlatanov and co managed to force a tie-break as the band of Zhekov looked a little overconfident and nervous but Piacenza wasted some opportunities in the fifth set. Piacenza collected 12 blocks, Kohut had 4.

Martin Stoev (Coach Tomis Constanta): “It’s been a prestigious victory and this is our first ever win over an Italian side. After the first set in which we made so many mistakes in attack, we started to play as a team. I don’t know how we’ll do in this Champions League but in my opinion Piacenza remains among the favourites to go through”.

Hristo Zlatanov (Copra Ardelia Piacenza): “What changed after the first set is that they played with more fighting spirit while we lost our way. We knew we could not let them play. But I will keep saying this: if we play with consistency, the way we know how, we can win. That’s why we got to the fifth set. We lost because we played poorly, not because of referee mistakes”.
