Un under-par performance from Giuliani’s men meant they received a severe beating from the Polish champions of Belchatow. The hosts could only give Belchatow a game in the first set, in which they surrendered at the very end among a tense atmosphere marked by dubious referee decisions. From the second set on, the Pols, who are still unbeaten in the competition, stepped up a gear a dominated in every fundamental: 66% in attack, 4 blocks and 7 aces. Besides, they were extremely effective in dig and on the counter. The Italians now need to win the return leg 3-0 or 3-1 in order to play the decisive golden set.

Alberto Giuliani (coach Cucine Lube Treia): “We have to admit that on the serve and in attack, the Pols have been better than us. The first set could have changed the outcome of the game, five referee mistakes in such a game shouldn’t happen. But then we started to play like they had stolen us our toy. We have been less aggressive, you could see some have less experience at this level in some key positions and Kovar was not hundred percent fit. In the third set, they kept their foot on the pedal while our spikers faded, and the divide grew further. In recent years, we usually went through by winning the return game, while when we won the first leg we usually went out, that should serve as motivation for next Thursday”.

Marko Podrascanin (Cucine Lube Treia): “First of all, congratulations to Belchatow, they had a great game and deserved the victory. The first set could have been key, we lost it and we were not in it with our heads in the other sets. We needed to do more with our serve against such a strong opponent, while their spikers had high percentages in attack, that was the key to their win. We have to stay positive now: we could not have played worse than tonight, next Thursday we’ll try our best in front of 13 thousand polish fans”.
