Round 1. Sweeps for Trento, Cuneo and Padova. Three points as well for Macerata, Modena and Latina, which won in Belluno. Tie-break triumph for Vibo Valentia over San Giustino

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO – ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23)

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 14, Della Lunga 2, Juantorena 13, Vieira De Oliveira 3, Sokolov 11, Djuric 10, Colaci (L), Stokr 2, Bari (L), Burgsthaler 3. DNP Birarelli, Zygadlo, Lanza. Coach. Stoytchev.

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA: Aleksiev 3, Rossini (L), Zhukouski 3, Nikic 1, Forni, Molteni 4, Buti 7, Rooney 3, Gavotto 16, Shumov 6, Roumeliotis 1. DNP Ciabattini, Mor. Coach. Zanini.

Trentino’s defence of the title won last May 15 in Roma began with a win against Monza. Superb blocking and a fantastic Kazyiski made the difference.

Tsvetan Sokolov (Itas Diatec Trentino): “It’s been a hard-fought game right until the end, even if at 2-0 we might have thought too soon it was over. It wasn’t as Monza played better in the third. Still, we did a good job of getting back to a good level in the end and take this important 3-0 win”.

Simone Buti (Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “In the PalaTrento arena, we never managed to even get a set, every year it’s the same story. Compared to previous year, we did a better job though, especially considering we had not trained much together. I want to congratulate Zhukouski, who had a great game despite the negative outcome”.

FIDIA PADOVA – COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 27-25)

FIDIA PADOVA: Garghella (L), Schwarz, Gonzalez 5, Cricca 1, Giannotti, Rosso 12, De Marchi 15, Simeonov 18, Semenzato 1, Suljagic 7. DNP Tiberti, Koshikawa, Zingaro. Coach. Montagnani.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Kral 1, Papi 9, Zhekov 4, Nikolov 17, Massari, Zlatanov 5, Holt 5, Tencati 5, Penchev. DNP Ammerman, Sidibé, Marretta. Coach. Lorenzetti.

Before the start of the game, Padova’s libero Andrea Garghella, received a special award for his 300 appearances with the club.

Paolo Montagnani (Coach Fidia Padova): “Starting off this way is a dream. We played with fighting spirit and obtained three important points. I think that as soon as Piacenza will have found its balance, it will be a very difficult team to beat. It would have been hard to find the MVP today. Simeonov has been a leader on offence, De Marchi and Rosso worked extremely hard and Gonzalez showed how much he wanted to do well in this league. Let’s focus on the Trento game now, it will be a very tough one”.

Angelo Lorenzetti (Coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “When the fixture list came out, I knew the game against Padova would be difficult. We led in two sets but unfortunately we did not manage to seal it. There is still a lot to improve and a lot of work on”.

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO – MARMI LANZA VERONA 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-23)

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Mastrangelo 5, Henno (L), Ngapeth 10, Fortunato 6, Wijsmans 11, Vissotto Neves 12, Grbic 4, Patriarca, Baranowicz. DNP Van Lankvelt, Caceres, Rossi, Pieri. Coach. Gulinelli.

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Popp 6, Ter Horst, Calderan, Meoni 5, Smerilli (L), Patriarca 10, Casarin, Kromm 8, Postiglioni 4, Gasparini 13. DNP Kosmina. Coach. Bagnoli.

Cuneo’s season began with Hubert Henno receiving his ‘libero of the year 2010-11’ award and a victory over Verona. Difficult starts of the first two sets but in each one Cuneo found the resources late to come on top.

Flavio Gulinelli (Coach Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We found it hard today. We knew Verona was going to be up for it and be ready to make it difficult for us. We were tense at the start, we’re coming off some intense weeks of training and some players only arrived late in the last week. But we managed to have the better of them in the clutch moments. I really liked Ngapeth and the way Nikola led the team, as well as Wijsmans’ patience as he came out of a difficult situation”.

Stefano Patriarca (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We have to keep working like that because we are on the right track. We are improving and I think you could see that on court. We have to be aware it was a good game. Shame the serve did not go well: we had begun well, then we lost our way. We also lost our focus at times, which made us lose consistency and prevented us from scoring clutch points which could have changed the outcome of the game”.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – CMC RAVENNA 3-1 (25-13, 24-26, 25-15, 25-19)

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Pajenk 1, Savani 23, Exiga (L), Parodi 13, Stankovic 4, Monopoli, Travica 4, Omrcen 24, Podrascanin 8. DNP Lampariello, Van Walle, Randazzo. Coach. Giuliani.

CMC RAVENNA: Mengozzi 15, Leonardi, Corvetta, Sirri 8, Tabanelli (L), Gallosti, Moro 9, Brunner 11, Gruszka 6. DNP Bendandi, Verhanneman, Ricci. Coach. Babini.

Everything went as expected: three points for Macerata over newly promoted Ravenna. But applause went to both sides as it was an excellent game, especially considering it was the first of the season. Ravenna was without Quiroga, Roberts and Verhanneman.

Cristian Savani (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We starting the pre-season with three players, and had the full squad only a few days ago: what I mean is that in this game only the result mattered, and taking all three points makes me really happy. We had ups and downs, but it is totally normal when the players don’t know each other very much”.

Antonio Babini (Coach CMC Ravenna): “It’s been a strange game, in the first and third set we looked like a junior squad, while in the others we fought as we should do. We are in a tricky situation because of the missing players but we try to do our best”.

SISLEY BELLUNO – ANDREOLI LATINA 1-3 (27-25, 14-25, 19-25, 21-25)

SISLEY BELLUNO: Abdelaziz 1, Fei 12, Horstink 14, Dolfo 6, Kohut 9, De Togni 8, Suxho 3, Antonov, Sorato (L), Ogurcak 1. DNP Szabò, Curti. Coach. Piazza.

ANDREOLI LATINA: Hardy-Dessources 11, Gitto 3, Sottile 4, De Pandis (L), Troy 21, Roca Borrero 20, Fragkos 15. DNP Rivera Caamano, Jarosz, Guemart, Galabinov. Coach. Prandi.

1100 supporters came to see Belluno’s first ever game. A historical moment but the club will have to wait for its first victory as Latina came out on top with Troy elected MVP.

Robert Horstink (Sisley Belluno): “We really struggled in reception, we did not manage to deal with their serves for long spells, we lacked organization and communication between us. We are all good players, but today we did not play as a team and that cannot be accepted, it was a poor performance. I hope this is not our real level, otherwise this is very worrying. We have to be more united, we’ll work during the week and I expect improvements to be made. I am convinced we can do much better”.

Daniele Sottile (Andreoli Latina): “We knew that the beginning of the season, when the teams are not ready yet, is the best time to beat some big teams. We are a young team, we are not indicated among the best teams of the league, we have made a lot of changes, but in my opinion, if we play humble, we can make it hard for anyone, today’s breakthrough will not be an isolated win. We have players that are not extremely well known, but I think they are strong. We played simple volleyball today, but with fighting spirit, courage, and our positive attitude rewarded us. We have to continue this way, but we must keep our feet on the ground”.

CASA MODENA – M. ROMA VOLLEY 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-19)

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Sala 12, Diachkov 1, Dennis 10, Carletti, Kooy 21, Bellei, Yosifov 7, Esko 3, Anderson 19, Piscopo. DNP Catellani, Casoli. Coach. Bagnoli.

M. ROMA VOLLEY: Lebl 9, Paolucci 1, Maruotti 8, Zaytsev 17, Boninfante 2, Bencz 4, Puliti, Corsano (L), Sabbi 8, Cisolla 4, Bjelica 6. DNP Passier, Sorgente. Coach. Giani.

Modena’s season begun with a convincing win at home at the expense of Roma, who had started off the strongest with Zaytsev shining. 3500 made their joy felt as Modena won and Dick Kooy was named MVP.

Daniele Bagnoli (Coach Casa Modena): “I am extremely happy, this was a great victory. I was not reassured before the game, I know Roma is a strong team. Besides, like other teams, we have trained very little all together. It’s been a nice surprise to see certain things. Anderson and Kooy were great, the latter had an incredible game. It’s only the beginning, we have so many things to work on”.

Andrea Giani (Coach M. Roma Volley): “The game was decided on the serve. Modena played very well from the 9 metres and in attack, but we could have handled better certain situations. I have seen some positive things, we played well in attack. We are a young team and we know all the work there is ahead of us”.

ENERGY RESOURCES SAN GIUSTINO – TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA 2-3 (25-22, 18-25, 29-27, 21-25, 14-16)

ENERGY RESOURCES SAN GIUSTINO: Creus Larry 12, Rauwerdink 13, Mc Kibbin, Cozzi 10, Bartoletti 8, Finazzi 3, Petkovic 3, Tholse 11, Lo Bianco 1, Giovi (L), Starovic 9, Urnaut 13. Coach. De Giorgi.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Falasca, Coscione 4, Cernic 10, Diaz 23, Grassano, Rak 9, Bonetti, Klapwijk 21, Barone 5, Fanuli (L), Nikolov 7. DNP Mignolo, Bratoev. Coach. Blengini.

Bitter start for San Giustino, defeated at the tie-break by Vibo Valentia. More bad news came with the injury of outside hitter Sasa Starovic. MVP: Luis Diaz.

Andrea Giovi (Energy Resources San Giustino): “Starovic’s injury definitely made it hard for us. We immediately paid the price in the second set in which we were morally losing it. But that was not the only reason for the loss, we still have to gel as a group”.

Gianlorenzo Blengini (coach Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “I am extremely satisfied with my team. It came out of a tricky situation: we had lost the third set, and although we were tense at the beginning of the fourth, we managed to loosen up and win it. There were two phases in the tie-break: in the first we did well. Then, they came back thanks to Creus’ serve. In the end, details made the difference”.
